1. Bilbao → Pamplona (1h15 drive)

Start your journey in Bilbao, grab your rental or camper, and head to Pamplona to stock up on groceries and camping supplies. Supermarkets like E.Leclerc, Carrefour, and local markets are well-equipped. It’s the last major city before heading into rural terrain.

📍 2. Antiguo Balneario de Tiermas & Escó

A fascinating first stop. The Antiguo Balneario de Tiermas is a submerged spa that occasionally resurfaces when reservoir levels drop (usually late summer). Combine this with a visit to Escó, an eerie abandoned village nearby.

Facilities: None – bring snacks and water.

Parking: Free roadside parking near the reservoir.

Tip: Check water levels before you go. Tiermas is only visible during drought periods.

📍 3. Sallent de Gállego & Salto de Sallent

A picturesque mountain town surrounded by peaks and lakes. You can also walk to the waterfall, which is an easy 30 minute hike each way. The water is absolutely freezing, but it’s a beautiful spot to visit.

Main Hike: Salto de Sallent waterfall (easy 2.7 km return, ~1 hour)

Parking: Free lot at “El Escaladillo” in town

Eat: Local spots like Casa Clemente or Asador El Rincón serve hearty mountain meals

Camp: Wild camping tolerated in some areas (discreetly); otherwise head toward Formigal

📍 4. Lac de Fabrèges & Artouste Area (France)

Cross into France to explore the lakeside area of Fabrèges near the Artouste station.

Activities: Pedal boats, hiking trails, or just relax by the lake

Parking: Free aire for vans and cars (approx. 80 spaces)

Camping: Nearby campsite or use the aire (self-contained only)

📍 5. Train d’Artouste & Lac d’Artouste

Ride one of Europe’s highest tourist trains, climbing to nearly 2,000 m. You start by taking a cable car to the top, where you will then ride the train for approximately 1 hour each way, through the mountains. Arriving at the station, you are given approximately 1,45 hours to go off and explore the nearby lake (about a 5-10 minute walk up lots of stairs)

Season: Open May–early October

Cost: ~€50–60 per adult (includes cable car + train)

Hike Option: Short 15–20 min walk from the station to the lake

Booking: Strongly recommended during peak season (artouste.fr)

Ultimate Pyrenees Road Trip

📍 6. Camping des Gaves – Laruns

After exploring Artouste, stop in Laruns, a charming French mountain town. This camping is great, with a swimming pool, table tennis and a pump track. The staff are also extremely kind and the facilities are clean. I’d definitely recommend!

Campground: Camping des Gaves (4-star)

Facilities: Pool, restaurant, laundry, clean bathrooms

Rates: €22–€90/night depending on season & pitch type

Perfect Base For: Hiking, canyoning, or relaxing

📍 7. Hike to Lac du Montagnon

A lesser-known gem and one of the most beautiful heart-shaped lakes in the Pyrenees. Genuinely one of the hardest hikes I’ve ever done (and I’ve done so many!). It is practically all up hill (took us 3.45 hours to go up) and the top part is really slippy with loose rock. You really do need to have a good level of fitness to make this hike. You also need to reserve a parking spot in advance by booking it online at least 1 day in advance – it’s free, but must be done otherwise you’ll be fined.

Trailhead: Village of Aydius or Col de Lasserre

Difficulty: Moderate to challenging (~9 km, 8 hours round-trip, 1000 m ascent)

Parking: Free lot near the trailhead

Camping: Not allowed directly at the lake. Camp down near Aydius.

Ultimate Pyrenees Road Trip

📍 8. Camping Le Saillet – Lestelle-Bétharram

A convenient overnight stop close to Lourdes and the Parc National des Pyrénées. We really enjoyed our time staying here. The location is a bit random, but it’s a really nice play to recharge your energy. The pool are facilities are great, the food is really tasty (I had the chicken with mushroom sauce both nights as it was so good!) and the prices are extremely competitive!

Facilities: Snack bar, pool, shaded plots, breakfast on request

Rates: From €27/night

Good For: Rest day or base for Cauterets region

📍 9. Pont d’Espagne & Lac de Gaube

One of the most iconic alpine views in France. You can hike or take a chairlift up for about 17 euros but personally I don’t think it’s worth it. This hike is relatively easy, with ups and downs throughout. The walk is really enjoyable, so if you’re able, I recommend going on foot.

Hike: ~8.5 km round-trip (4–5 hours) or quick access via lift

Difficulty: Moderate with some incline

Parking: Paid (around €7–8 per day)

Eat: Mountain restaurant near Lac de Gaube

📍 10. Cirque de Gavarnie (UNESCO Site)

A must-visit stop in this Ultimate Pyrenees Road Trip is Cirque de Gavernie. A natural amphitheatre surrounded by towering cliffs and waterfalls. One of the main reasons I wanted to visit the French Pyrenees was to see this majestical spot!

Hike: ~2–3 hours return from the village to the main waterfall viewpoint

Parking: Paid public lot at the edge of town (€5–8)

Stay: No wild camping allowed; use nearby campsites or guesthouses

📍 11. Mountain Karting at Lac de Fabrèges

If you missed it earlier, return to Fabrèges for a ride on the Mountain Kart—an off-road downhill go-kart experience.

Open: Summer only

Cost: ~€10–15 for a session

Fun Factor: High! No driving license needed

📍 12. Lac de Bious-Artigues

An easy-access lake with optional hikes in the Ossau Valley.

Parking: Free but limited—arrive early

Hikes: Loop around the lake or longer trails into the valley

Camping: Wild camping allowed (above 1,000 m, minimum 1-hour walk from car) per French national park rules

Ultimate Pyrenees Road Trip

📍 13. Formigal & Ibones de Anayet

Back on the Spanish side, hike to the stunning Ibones de Anayet, mountain lakes with views of volcanic peaks.

Trailhead: Near Formigal Portalet (Spain–France border)

Hike: ~3–4 hours return, moderate

Parking: Free, but unpaved in places

Facilities: Small bar/café near Formigal

📍 14. Bardenas Reales Desert (Navarra)

End your nature loop in a surreal semi-desert landscape often compared to Utah.

Activities: Short hikes, photo spots (e.g., Castildetierra)

Access: Free

Parking: Visitor center or roadside areas

Camping: Not allowed inside the park, but a few campsites nearby

📍 15. Deba (Basque Coast)

Wind down your trip on the Basque coast. I highly recommend booking this hotel on the coast for a day or two of relax. They have a spa area (pool, sauna and steam room) that you can access daily, included in the price. It was SUCH a good way for us to end our camping trip!

What to Do: Beach walk, relax at seaside cafés, try Basque cuisine

Eat: Local pintxos bars or Restaurante Hika

Parking: Free spots outside town; paid zones near the beach

Camping: Coastal sites or return to Bilbao for your final night

Gran Canaria is an island of contrasts, offering everything from towering mountains to golden sand dunes and charming coastal towns. Whether you’re a nature lover, a sunset chaser, or someone looking to soak up the island’s unique charm, here are 5 Incredible Places to Visit in Gran Canaria.

1. Roque Nublo – A Symbol of Gran Canaria

Roque Nublo is one of the island’s most iconic landmarks, standing at 1,813 meters above sea level. This volcanic rock formation offers breathtaking panoramic views of Gran Canaria’s rugged landscape. It’s a favourite among hikers, with a relatively short but rewarding trail leading to the summit.

However, due to recent environmental concerns, access to Roque Nublo is now restricted. The local government has implemented a new policy limiting the number of visitors. You need to request a time and date to visit IN ADVANCE and access will now be via official buses instead of private vehicles. For the latest updates on visiting regulations and shuttle bus schedules, plus reserving your spot, visit this official website of Gran Canaria’s tourism board.

If you know when you are visiting the island and can plan this for ahead, I would definitely recommend going, it’s worth it.

It’s also a fantastic place to watch the sunset, as the sun drops over the layered landscape, creating an incredible show!

5 incredible places to visit in Gran Canaria

2. Pico de las Nieves – The Best Sunset Spot

As the highest peak on the island (1,949 meters), Pico de las Nieves offers some of the most spectacular sunset views in Gran Canaria. On clear days, you can see across the ocean to Tenerife’s Mount Teide. There’s no need to hike to the top, as a scenic road leads to an accessible viewpoint. Watching the sun dip below the horizon from this vantage point is a magical experience, with the surrounding mountains turning shades of orange and pink.

You can of course choose to visit during the day for an equally magical experience, but for me, it’s a sunset spot!

If you prefer, you can opt to go on a guided tour of both Roque Nublo and Pico de las Nieves here: Also visiting the dormant crater of Bandama before admiring breathtaking views from the highest mountain of Gran Canaria. Later, visiting the charming village of Teror, home to the Basilica of the Lady of the Pine.

3. Agaete – A Hidden Gem for Hikers

Agaete, located on the island’s northwest coast, is known for its stunning natural beauty and dramatic mountain landscapes. It’s a great destination for hikers, with trails leading through the lush Tamadaba Natural Park, offering stunning ocean views. Los Berrazales, a valley famous for its coffee plantations and tropical fruit farms, is also worth a visit.

After a day of hiking, visitors can relax at Las Salinas, natural seawater pools carved into volcanic rock, perfect for a refreshing swim. You can also see the sun go down from this spot so it’s the perfect day.

5 incredible places to visit in Gran Canaria

4. Dunas de Maspalomas – A Desert by the Sea

The Maspalomas Dunes are one of Gran Canaria’s most famous natural wonders, resembling a vast desert stretching toward the Atlantic Ocean. However, to protect this fragile ecosystem, walking on the dunes is now prohibited. You can visit the viewpoint and see the dunes with the sea behind them for a beautiful view, and then, if you wish to get closer, you can access designated areas by heading down to the beachfront. This means driving to one of the nearby hotels on the beach, where the dunes meet the sea, and walking from there. The best way to experience this area is to stroll along the shoreline at sunset, watching the golden sands shift with the wind. Can you tell I’m a big fan of the sunset?

5. Puerto de Mogán – The Most Picturesque Town

Known as “Little Venice” for its canals and colourful bougainvillea-covered streets, Puerto de Mogán is one of the most charming coastal towns in Gran Canaria. It boasts a beautiful marina, a golden sandy beach, and plenty of waterfront restaurants serving fresh seafood. If you’re visiting on a Friday, don’t miss the Puerto de Mogán market, where you can shop for local crafts, food products, and souvenirs. Boat trips and snorkeling excursions also depart from here, making it a great spot for a relaxing yet adventurous day.

In Puerto de Mogán, you can opt to go on a cool submarine safari too!

Right next to Puerto de Mogán is a famous sunset spot on the island. If you type in ‘acceso explanada’ this the right direction. You’ll see cars parked there, walk through the park and up onto the cliff edge, and you’ll see other people around. The sun typically sets right infront of you over the water from this spot.

5 must-visit places in La Gomera

La Gomera, one of the lesser-known Canary Islands, is a paradise for nature lovers, hikers, and those seeking a peaceful retreat. With its lush forests, dramatic cliffs, and charming villages, the island offers a unique experience far from the hustle of larger tourist hotspots. Here are 5 must-visit places in La Gomera.

1. Garajonay National Park – A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Garajonay National Park is the heart of La Gomera, a misty, prehistoric laurel forest that feels like stepping into another world. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this park is a haven for hikers, offering well-marked trails that wind through ancient trees and breathtaking viewpoints. One of the best hikes is to Alto de Garajonay, the highest peak on the island (1,487 meters), where you can enjoy panoramic views over La Gomera and even neighboring islands on clear days.

This is probably the coolest place in La Gomera for me, and if you like photography, I would recommend going early morning. If you’re lucky, you’ll capture the light rays coming through the mist, and it’s the most magical view ever! Click on the link to see my Instagram photo to see what I mean!

If you prefer to go on a guided tour of the National Park, you can do so here.

2. San Sebastián de La Gomera – A Town Full of History

The island’s capital, San Sebastián de La Gomera, is rich in history and the best place to learn about its connection to Christopher Columbus, who stopped here before his voyage to the Americas. Visitors can explore Torre del Conde, a well-preserved medieval tower, and the Casa de Colón, a museum dedicated to Columbus’ time on the island. The town also has a relaxed charm, with pleasant cafés, a scenic harbor, and nearby beaches like Playa de la Cueva offering a great spot for a swim.

3. Roque Agando – A Majestic Volcanic Rock

Roque Agando is one of La Gomera’s most striking natural landmarks. This towering volcanic rock formation rises dramatically from the landscape, making it a must-see for photographers and nature enthusiasts. The area surrounding Roque Agando offers incredible viewpoints, with several hiking trails leading through the rugged terrain. It’s particularly breathtaking at sunset when the rock is bathed in golden light, creating a mystical atmosphere.

4. Agulo – The Prettiest Village in La Gomera

Often called the “Jewel of La Gomera,” Agulo is a picturesque village perched above the ocean with cobbled streets and traditional Canarian architecture. The backdrop of towering cliffs and views of Mount Teide on Tenerife make this one of the island’s most photogenic spots. A short drive from the village leads to Mirador de Abrante, a glass-floored viewpoint that offers a thrilling panoramic perspective over Agulo and the Atlantic below. Mirador de Abrante also has the most colouful red landscape, scattered with green vegetation. It’s wild!

5. Los Órganos – Spectacular Coastal Rock Formations

Los Órganos is one of La Gomera’s most fascinating natural wonders. These unique basalt rock formations resemble giant organ pipes and rise dramatically from the ocean. I tried to fly my drone there from the top of a cliff to get some epic footage but nearly lost it as the signal was weak. So, I don’t have my own picture for this one, BUT I took a screenshot of Las Islas Canarias website so you can see that it is incredible.

They can only be seen from the sea, so booking a boat tour from Valle Gran Rey or Playa de Santiago is the best way to experience them. I don’t have a link for the tours and can’t seem to find specific companies that offer them, so I believe your best bet is to visit the ports and ask around 🙂

Bonus tips!

One thing to note about visiting La Gomera, is that the roads are VERY windy. In fact, I don’t think I even remember seeing one straight road. It’s safe to drive, but you do need to be cautious.

If you are on Tenerife island and you just want to visit for the day, you can opt for a full day guided tour around the island of La Gomera!

La Gomera is a hidden gem in the Canary Islands, offering a blend of lush forests, rugged coastlines, and cultural history. Whether you’re hiking through Garajonay National Park, admiring the ocean views from Agulo, or taking a boat trip to Los Órganos, this island promises an unforgettable experience.

Here are a list of the 12 best places to visit in Mallorca, the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands. It offers a blend of beautiful beaches, scenic landscapes, cultural sites, and vibrant nightlife.

Cala Pi

Cala Pi is a picturesque beach located on the south coast of Mallorca. It’s known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and stunning cliffs that surround the bay.

The best time to visit Cala Pi beach based on the positioning of the sun is from late morning (10:30/11) or early afternoon. The sun hits the beach directly during these times, meaning you can sunbathe and enjoying the scenery. Note that there will be lots of cars by this point 😅 If you want direct sunlight on the beach, avoid the late afternoon as the cliffs may cast shadows.

Parking can be a bit challenging during peak seasons, as the area tends to get crowded. However, there are parking lots available near the beach. You want to go early to ensure you get a spot, but not too early that there’s no sun shining on the beach.

The nearest supermarkets and restaurants are within walking distance from the beach, within a few hundred meters. You shouldn’t have trouble finding places to eat or grab essentials

Cala Figuera

Cala Figuera is a picturesque fishing village on the southeastern coast of Mallorca, known for its charming harbor dotted with colorful fishing boats. The village is characterized by narrow winding streets, traditional whitewashed buildings, and waterfront cafes serving fresh seafood.

It’s a serene spot to enjoy the laid-back Mediterranean lifestyle and soak in the beauty of the surrounding cliffs and crystal-clear waters.

Exploring the village on foot is the best way to discover its hidden gems. Make sure you say hello to the locals in the harbour, they’re extremely chatty! ✨

⚠️ Please note there are more than one Cala Figuera’s in Mallorca, one in the north and one in the south east so make sure to put the right one in your map!

Cala Llombards

Among the 12 Best Places to Visit in Mallorca is Cala Llombards, located on the southeastern coast of Mallorca. It is a small, picturesque beach known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, fine white sand, dramatic surrounding cliffs and of course, the cute beach huts!

Ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and even cliff diving. You should arrive early because, as with all spots in Mallorca, they fill up quickly. The beach’s natural beauty is complemented by nearby attractions like Cala S’Almonia and the Es Pontàs rock formation. This is a great snorkelling spot in Mallorca, with tranquil waters and clear visibility.

Valldemossa

Valldemossa, a picturesque town in the Tramuntana mountains of Mallorca. It has a rich history dating back to the 13th century and is most famous for its Carthusian Monastery.

The village has a medieval charm with narrow cobblestone streets and traditional stone houses. The locals have also spent time making their individual homes look beautiful, with many plant pots hanging around front doorways.

💡I definitely recommend arriving early. Valldemossa is a very popular town among tourists and by 11am it’s busy! Don’t go too early that the sun hasn’t risen enough to shine through the cobbledstreets. I’d say 09:30 is your sweet spot but will also depend on the time of year ☀️

Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca, the capital city, is a captivating blend of historical charm and modern amenities. There is a magnificent Gothic cathedral renowned for its beautiful architecture with views over the Bay of Palma. The city’s Old Town has a maze of narrow, cobbled streets, lined with ancient buildings, quaint shops, and lively tapas bars. You can explore Almudaina Palace and Bellver Castle, offering panoramic views of the city. Palma also boasts a bustling marina, beautiful beaches, and a dynamic nightlife, making it a versatile destination for history enthusiasts, beachgoers, and night owls alike.

12 Best Places to Visit in Mallorca

Here are a selection of fun activities and tours in Mallorca that you may like.

Es Trenc

Es Trenc is a stunning beach located on the southern coast of Mallorca, Spain. It’s a great spot for young families as the tide here is very calm, meaning you can paddle in the water all day with no worries! It’s just a little cold 🥶

Es Trenc is known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and soft white sand, and is often considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. The area around Es Trenc is protected, maintaining its natural beauty and pristine environment.

The beach itself is free to access, as it’s public. However, there are parking fees if you arrive by car, and costs €5 for the day. The parking here is huge, so if the small cala’s are packed-out, this is a great plan B!

It’s a beautiful place to take a picnic, a pack of cards and a bar and ball to happily spend the day.

Jardins d’Alfabia

Jardins de Alfabia is a stunning historic estate renowned for its beautiful gardens, ancient architecture, and serene atmosphere. There is a delightful blend of Arabic, Italian, and English garden styles, with elements such as ornate fountains, tranquil ponds, lush citrus orchards, and towering palm trees. The main house showcases traditional Mallorcan architecture with charming interiors that reflect its rich history.

The entry price is around €9 for adults and €5 for children. It is open from 09:00-18:00, but the last entry is at 17:00.

Cap Formentor Lighthouse & Viewpoint

Cap Formentor, known for its breathtaking landscapes and panoramic views, especially at sunset. The drive to Cap Formentor is an adventure in itself, featuring winding roads with steep cliffs. The endpoint is the iconic Formentor Lighthouse, There’s no entry fee to visit Cap Formentor, but the road can be busy and there’s limited parking, so bare that in mind when planning your timings.

Sa Calobra

Sa Calobra is a breathtaking cove where the mountains meet the sea. Located on the northwest coast of Mallorca, it is only accessible via the winding, scenic MA-2141 road, known for its dramatic hairpin bends and stunning mountain views. This road is full of cyclists, and at many parts is not wide enough for 2 cars. It can be quite chaotic driving here, so go slow!

Before making your way to the bottom, make sure to have a small pit spot at Nus de sa Corbata to check out this viewpoint, overlooking the windy road below, and to the right you can also see the ocean.

There is just one car park at the bottom, so I recommend going early morning or late afternoon. From the parking, it takes approximately 15 minutes to walk to the popular spot. Walk towards the sea, and you’ll see restaurants, bars, shops, and an information centre. Here there are public toilets that cost 0.50c per person.

Walk to your right (facing the sea) to reach the small but stunning beach nestled between towering cliffs. The water is crystal-clear and can be good for swimming/snorkelling but you do need to be careful. It was way too rough the day we went. One of the highlights of Sa Calobra is the Torrent de Pareis – a dramatic gorge that meets the sea, perfect for hiking and exploring.

Despite its remote location and windy roads, Sa Calobra does attract many visitors. There is no entry fee for the beach.

Due to the large crowds, amenities can be limited, so I would personally recommend bringing your own water and picnic!

12 Best Places to Visit in Mallorca

Sóller & Port de Sóller

Sóller is a picturesque town situated in a valley on the northwest coast of Mallorca. It is known for its charming blend of traditional Mallorcan architecture and stunning natural surroundings. The town’s heart is its vibrant main square, Plaça Constitució, lined with cafes, restaurants, and the impressive Church of Sant Bartomeu. One of the best things about visiting Sóller are the delicious fresh orange juice ice slushies from Ca’n Pau – I had never tried one before and it’s beyond refreshing!

The town of Sóller is famous for its historic wooden tram, which connects the town to the nearby Port de Sóller, offering a scenic ride through groves and mountains. The town also serves as a gateway to the Tramuntana mountains, making it a popular base for hikers. The Sóller Botanical Garden and the Can Prunera Museum of Modernism are also attractions that can be visited if you have time.

To visit Port de Soller, you can either drive there directly, or take the tram!

Caló des Moro

Calo des Moro is a small and secluded beach located on the southeastern coast of Mallorca. The water is crystal-clear and it’s surrounded by dramatic cliffs and limestone formations. To get to Calo des Moro, there is a big car park, however it is approximately a 1km walk from the point where you will descend to the beach.

You can opt to try and park closer (we did) but it is street parking and is very limited. We also saw police men coming around giving out parking tickets to those who had not respected neighbours driveways etc so ONLY park here if you are doing so legally. It’s a very popular spot so I’m pretty sure the police are frequent visitors.

Once you start to descend, you’ll firstly need to tackle the very steep staircase (it’s obviously way worse coming back up haha!). You can then opt to jump in the water at the first spot you arrive at, a small rocky area where lots of people jump in the sea. To get to Calo des Moro, keep left and walk through the tree area. You will arrive to the top of the bay and will most probably encounter a line of people waiting to get to the beach.

You do need to climb (slighty, it’s not very big!) hence the backlog of people. It is known as one of Mallorca’s hidden gems, however it is not so hidden anymore. The beach space is very limited, making it a crowded spot. It’s best to visit in the early morning!

This is a great spot for swimming and snorkelling as the waves tend to be relatively calm!

Mirador sa foradada

To end this blog post about the 12 Best Places to Visit in Mallorca, Mirador sa foradada is the perfect place to watch the sunset in Mallorca. The sun sets right over the ocean, in front of this viewpoint, also lighting up the nearby cliffs. There is a small parking fee, unless you arrive late enough and then it is free (check the machine!).

There is also a small bar where you can order a drink too and if you are hungry, the restaurant does serve food, yet I’ve heard mixed reviews.

At this viewpoint, there is also a museum dating back to the 17th century called Son Marroig, which costs 4euros to enter.

If you like to party, of course a trip to Mallorca wouldn’t be complete without a night out in Magaluf. Be warned, it lives up to its reputation – whether you think that is a good thing or not is up to you! 🙂

There’s an undeniable enchantment that comes with witnessing the sunset. Whether you’re seeking a moment of tranquility or hoping to capture the perfect photograph, here are the best sunset spots in Lanzarote.

1. Playa Blanca’s Promenade

The sun sets over Playa Blanca and its picturesque promenade offers uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean and neighboring islands. As the sun dips below the horizon, you’ll be treated to a mesmerizing display of colors. There are many waterfront cafes to choose from, or take a leisurely stroll along the promenade.

2. Mirador del Río

For a sunset experience that’s both awe-inspiring and romantic, head to Mirador del Río. Perched atop the towering cliffs of northern Lanzarote, this scenic lookout offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including the entire island of La Graciosa. This is hands down one of my favourite viewpoints on the entire island. The fact that you can see a whole island from above amazes me!

It was designed by the renowned artist César Manrique, and provides the perfect backdrop for watching the sun set in all its glory. You don’t have to go inside to have great views, you can also watch it from the neighbouring rocks. Mirador del Río is a must-visit spot for couples and nature enthusiasts alike.

Known for its pristine sands and crystal-clear waters, this idyllic beach is a great place to spend the entire afternoon.

So you’re planning on visiting Playa de las Catedrales to see the incredible phenomenon in person? I don’t blame you.

Playa de Las Catedrales is a famous beach located in Ribadeo, in the northwestern community of Galicia, Spain. Over the years, both the wind and the waves have created these incredible 30 metre high rock formations.

The downsides to reaching this location are 1. In winter, you’ll freeze your feet off, or 2. In summer you’ll be joined by 100’s of other tourists trying to do the exact same thing.

The likelihood of seeing the catedrales are slim, although I’m going to try to help you prepare to increase your chances!

Igna & Hanna, Playa de las Catedrales

** The photos in this blog are from my friend and travel buddy Igna & his dog Hanna, who managed to reach the rocks after 4 tries!**

Even with a lot of planning and checking of the tide times/coefficient, the two times I tried visiting playa de las catedrales were unfortunately not a success.

I’ve spoken to many people who had the same problem.

I’ve spoken to many people who had the same problem.

You MUST go at low tide, and I mean reaaally low. Pick a day that has an actual low tide (less than 1m).

TIP! The higher the coefficient, the bigger the difference between high tide and low tide.

This means the water comes in higher, but also goes out lower. Look for a day with low tide and high coefficient.

Check tide times here.

If you really want to see this beach, you’re going to have to get wet.

I was visiting Asturias in January and the water was ice cold. The first day, we visited the beach at low tide, but it wasn’t low enough. We took off our boots and braved the cold water, but it was too deep to get past.

The sea level was also beginning to slowly rise, and so we decided to abort the mission to avoid getting stranded.

We were bare foot for around 30 minutes and my feet turned completely pink. They were in a lot of pain. That night I came down with a cold (which I hadn’t had for over 3 years!) and was run down for the following few days.

Igna & Hanna, Playa de las Catedrales

We tried our luck and prepped for a second visit to this beach.

This time, the coefficient was higher and the tide lower (in metres), and so we really thought we’d make it through.

We got a lot further, but the 20 metres that separated us and the famous rock formations had water up to our waists.

After just recovering from the previous trip, I decided not to take off my boots again, and gave up.

If it were the summer, I’d have jumped in. But so will 100’s of others.

There are lots of photos of huge queues of people during the summer months trying to see them. Even if you’re not bothered about taking a photo, there’s still a queue.

Following the guidelines above and visiting playa de las catedrales when there is a low tide and high coefficient will greatly increase your chance of making it to this incredible place. If you are able to get in low season (avoid summer) you may be able to miss the queues.

The north of Spain boasts a beautiful coastline, and it was something I wasn’t expecting.

Here are 10 places to visit in Asturias that I personally loved.

Playa del Xagó

Playa del Xagó, a 2km stretch of golden sand accompanied by strong waves, making it a great surf spot.

Above the beach you’ll find this viewpoint, perfectly situated for front rows views of the sunset which lights up the beach below.

This area is also exposed to North East winds and so is frequently used as a place to practice paragliding.

There is actually a sign telling you not to set up your picnic on the grass in case you get landed on 😅

Luarca

Luarca; a very popular fishing village along the coast of Asturias. In summer it’s hard to find somewhere to park as it’s a very busy tourist attraction, with lots of street parties and outdoor events happening. This spot is a beautiful viewpoint where you can see the entire town from above.

Close by is a famous cemetery, voted one of the most stunning cemeteries in Spain with views over the harbour.

Faro de Cabo Vidio

This was my favourite area to watch the sunset in Asturias. Every time we came here, we could see the thin layer of fog in the distance, making its way through the cliffs & when the light hit it, it created this magical moment.

If you make your way towards the lighthouse, you’ll soon see Islote Chouzano! This was a great place to watch the sunrise.

Lagos de Covadonga

A natural area featuring 2 lakes, gorgeous views and numerous hiking trails. There are various car parks on the way up to the very top which are accessible in winter.

During the summer months, you can only get there using the shuttle bus, which costs around €9 per adult for a day pass & €3.5 for under 12’s.

The bus makes several stops, the most important stops are: Cangas de Onís, Covadonga, and the Lagos of Covadonga.

Once you purchase your bus ticket you can get on and off the bus in each stop throughout the day.

Cabo Busto

After a morning exploring the beautiful coastline of Asturias, we found this place to chill and fell asleep under the sun.

I think it’s the best siesta I’ve ever had. This beach gives me the ‘deserted island’ vibes.

You can make your way down to the sand by walking left after parking your car.

It is quite a steep hill so you’ll be working the legs on the way back up.

Playa de Torimbia

Playa de Torimbia was one of my favourite beaches in Asturias. Unfortunately, there is very limited space to park. It can probably fit approximately 5 cars total, and 1000’s of people on the beach.

I don’t get it.

The beach is huge. It takes around 20-30 minutes to walk down the hill from the parking.

10 places to visit in Asturias

A few steps from the parking lot, up the hill, there is also a lookout point. I really enjoyed this beach, so if you are lucky enough to grab a parking spot, you should take advantage of it.

Playas Las Gemelas

If you understand a bit of Spanish, you’ll know that this beach is called ‘twin beach’. Here you can expect to find two beaches side by side. There is a viewpoint in the middle of the two, which you can find here:

It is a short walk from the parking lot.

To access the beaches, you need to go down the hill to this address:

Playa de la Franca

Playa de la Franca is a less-popular beach and I’m not exactly sure why. Once you have parked your car, make your way to the beach. Pick a time of the day where there is low tide so that you can see this place in all its glory.

If you head to the right, you will find some crazy free-standing rock formations on the beach. If you get lucky and have good weather, you’ll also get to see the reflections of the rocks on the sand!

Gulpiyuri

I tried to explain this phenomenon on my Instagram stories and it’s safe to say it was a disaster haha. This place is so cool! There aren’t many beaches like this in the world.

Essentially, the beach is inside the land, 100m away from the sea. There is a natural tunnel that has been formed over the years as a result of the waves crashing against the rocks.

This tunnel is now an access point for the sea to reach the interior land. It has caused a natural beach to form, with a small stretch of sand.

At high tide, the waves make their way through the 100m tunnel and reach the sand. Here you can enjoy your own private, secluded beach!

Well, it’s not private anymore as it has become a popular place to visit. Nonetheless, it is still a worthy spot to visit.

TIP! Make sure you go at high tide otherwise you will only find the beach with no water.

Playa del Silencio

A black sand beach, surrounded by dramatic cliff drops. Playa del Silencio is a great place to spend a few hours in the sun. The black sand against the bright blue water makes this place a great spot for a photo opportunity. To the right of this beach, there is a smaller beach which is also beautiful.

I’ve put together a list of the best places to eat & drink in Lanzarote with the help of some of my good friends who live on the island!

** Some of these photos are not from the specific restaurants mentioned. I don’t have photos of them all, but I don’t like to write blogs without pictures as I find them hard to read 😛 ! **

I have picked a handful of restaurants from different parts of the island. This is so you have a few options close to where you’re staying, or where you are out exploring for the day. I have listed them under the town they are in to keep it organised.

Best restaurants in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

Toro Grill Asador ($$-$$$)

El Toro is a true beefateria for lovers and connoisseurs of Black Angus beef steaks. They serve classic steaks from marble meat, popular all over the world: Premium Ribeye, flavorful Picanha, highly marbled Tomahawk, and many more. The food the serve is fresh, and extremely tasty. I highly recommend a visit to Toro Grill Asador if staying in Puerto del Carmen.

Cofradia, Old Town Harbour ($$$)

Fancy some fresh fish, tapas, or seafood? Head to Cofradia. With delicious food and an outdoor terrace overlooking the boats in the harbour, you have yourself the perfect spot!

El Goloso, Biosfera Shopping Centre ($)

This restaurant is located in the main shopping centre of Puerto del Carmen, on the same floor as McDonalds. It probably isn’t somewhere you would usually think about going to eat, but the pizzas here are probably one of the best pizzas on the island!

The pastas are also homemade.

La cascada, Puerto del Carmen ($$$)

This restaurant is one of my good friends favourite restaurant. She swear that the ravioli starter de rabo de torro is one of the best things to eat on the menu.

Other items that this restaurant is known for is their meat; specifically their cordero or wagyu.

La Veletta, Old Town Harbour ($$$)

Right next to Cofradia, is La Veletta. It has a very similar vibe to its neighbouring restaurant and is equally delicious!

L’Italiano ($)

One of my new favourite restaurants is L’Italiano, located on the strip.

I usually avoid eating on the avenida as its generally known as a tourist attraction, thus the quality of food isn’t always great.

However, L’Italiano is a newish restaurant, and it’s delicious.

I had a mushroom and truffle pasta and OMG. I can’t wait to go back and eat it again. It’s called Fusili Porcini. The desserts are also delicious, I especially loved the chocolate fondant cake, and the vanilla pannacota!

One of the nicest pasta dishes I’ve eaten. Highly recommend – especially because the prices are also great!

Vino+ ($$$)

Vino+ has become a hotspot in PDC and so it’s necessary to reserve a table or you won’t get in. This place is pretty overpriced to be honest but it has a great atmosphere and both the food and service is good!

Best Places to Eat & Drink in Lanzarote

Lava bar ($$)

The Lava bar is in the same square as Vino+, has live music, great cocktails and a ‘grill your own meat’ option on your own personal hot plate! This is a great place to do something a little different!

P.S. The cocktails are amazing and the guy can make you anything you want if you ask for it! I had a passion fruit mojito that wasn’t on the menu and it was that good, I had 2 more 😉

La cantina – Mexican ($$)

Mexican cuisine has become one of my favourites over the past few years so I have to include a good Mexican restaurant in this list! La Cantina has really good food and is on the main strip of puerto del carmen.

Enjoy ($)

Enjoy is an Asian restaurant along the main strip in Puerto del Carmen and the food here is very tasty.

You can order single dishes or they also have the option to order menus to share between 2-6 people.

They include a selection of dishes and you usually end up taking home a doggy bag. My favourites are the duck & pancake, the spring rolls, and anything to do with noodles.

They also have a Teppanyaki station, but you mostly likely need to pre book this as it is very popular. The chef cooks your food for you infront of your face.

The Black Buffalo ($)

If you like ribs you have to check this place out! The BBQ ribs are great and the price is extremely affordable! We had a sharing platter and it was huge, we couldn’t finish it. They have a jack daniels BBQ sauce which is delicious and definitely worth a try!

Dos Mil Bakery

A cafe on the main strip in Puerto del Carmen is Dos Mil.

The prices are great, they have indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the beach across the road.

There is a great selection of sandwiches, pastries and cakes and they also have fresh orange juice, and other juices. A great place for breakfast.

Best restaurants in Playa Honda Lanzarote

Casa Tere, Playa Honda ($$-$$$)

The restaurant is in a lovely location on the promenade at Playa Honda and serves some of the best tapas on the island. The food is all homemade and very delicious. Give the goats cheese tarts and meatballs a try!

Casa Tere is frequented by locals as well as tourists.

La Orilla Beach Bar, Playa Honda ($$$)

Good for cocktails & picoteo (small bites)

*Photo taken from La Orilla IG page

The food and cocktails here are very tasty! The downside is the portion sizes of the meals are rather small, and quite expensive. However, it’s a beautiful place to sit and enjoy the view over the beach and the quality of the products is great!

Best Places to Eat & Drink in Lanzarote

La Ópera – Playa Honda ($$)

Located in Playa Honda close to Deiland shopping center, with plenty of parking. They have a great selection of lunch specials and it is a popular spot among the locals. Favourite items include their meat, fish, ribs and wine.

Best restaurants in Arrecife Lanzarote

Restaurante Cala de Luis Leon, El Charco ($$-$$$)

Luis Leon is a well known chef on the island and so you can expect to eat a great meal here. The restaurant is located in El Charco de San Gines in Arrecife, which is a beautiful harbour where all the small boats dock. There are many restaurants in the area and there is a great atmosphere.

The croquettes, tomato bread, burgers, ribs and steak are all to be recommended.

La Rustica ($)

A delicious Italian restaurant in the capital city of Lanzarote. The prices are great and so is the food!

La Lolita Bakery ($)

This small bakery has a great selection of cakes, pastries and sandwiches.

The prices are extremely competitive.

They also have good coffee, fresh orange juice and a few cooked items. I love this bakery for breakfast!

Best restaurants in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote

Bon Bon Cafe

One of my favourite cafes on the island is Bon Bon cafe in Costa Teguise.

*photo taken from Bon Bon cafe’s IG page

They have a very colourful menu, ranging from healthy avocado toasts, to deliciously unhealthy pancakes coated in nutella.

The burgers are also fantastic, my favourite is the one that comes with goats cheese.

You have to try the pancakes here. I usually take someone else with me and share a pancake as a dessert post meal!

Suculenta Cafe

If Bon Bon is packed, and it probably will be, Suculenta Cafe also has a delicious menu.

Be aware that the wait time is usually pretty long here.

Hopefully they’ll add some more staff to the floor.

My friend and I tried a selection of toasts and all of them were delicious.

They also have fresh juices, burgers, smoothie bowls etc.

I’d definitely recommend the food here, the service not as much.

Another local restaurant in Arrieta is El Amanecer.

This restaurant is very popular among the locals. They have lots of indoor seating, so it’s perfect for a windy (or extremely hot) day, while still having large glass windows for you to admire the views.

They have a number of delicious tapas dishes available, also local soups, and a great selection of fish.

La Taberna del Puerto, Puerto Calero ($$)

Located in the beautiful harbour of Puerto Calero is La Taberna del Puerto. This restaurant is famous for its paellas and other rice dishes and is said to serve the best in the area.

If you like fish, you should try the classic fideua dish; fresh fish, a variety of tapas (appetizers) and salad.

One of my favourite places to eat breakfast in Lanzarote is Natural Nada Mas.

The literal meaning of the name is natural, nothing more. This is exactly what you should expect to eat here.

Think Australian style brunch, with avocado toasts, eggs, smoked salmon, smoothie bowls, fresh juices, you name it!

If you like fresh ingredients on your plate, this cafe is for you!

Puro Gusto, Puerto Calero

This small Italian restaurants is tucked away upstairs, with a balcony overlooking the boats in the marina. If you like fresh salads, you are in for a treat. The ingredients are delicious and the portion sizes are humongous. I ordered a salad with burrata, and it was bigger than the size of my head. Really tasty food here!

Brisa Marina ($$)

A very popular spot in Playa Blanca among the locals and tourists alike. If you fancy fresh fish or seafood, this is the place for you! I also love the Lasana here, because they use a lot of bechamel sauce and I think that’s the best part lol. In summer, they have a sprinkler system above your head to spray tiny bits of water on you to keep you cool.

I’ve been in the Canary Islands for a few months and a question I’ve been asked a lot is “which Canary Island should I visit?”.

So, here goes.

In this blog post you’ll find out what you can expect to find on each one, and from there you can make your own decision on where you want to go.

I don’t think you can compare one to another & one will be better suited to you based on your own preferences.

The Canary Islands

The canaries are a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, just 100km off the coast of Morocco, Africa. Their location means that the weather is warm all year round, making them the perfect winter escape and a fantastic summer holiday destination.

Formed of 8 main islands, across a geographical landscape of only 473km, they are so close together, yet they couldn’t be more different.

Each one has its own unique offering.

From Lanzarote; the island of 1000 volcanoes to La Gomera’s dense rainforests, you will find a diverse mix of landscapes. So, when you ask me, “Which Canary island is your favourite?” or “Which Canary Island should I visit?” – it’s impossible to say.

If you have time, I highly recommend checking them all out!

We’ll Start at the top right of the map and make our way down, so first up is Lanzarote and its neighbouring island of La Graciosa!

Which Canary Island Should I Visit? – Lanzarote & La Graciosa

What can you expect from visiting Lanzarote?

Lanzarote is the fourth largest island in the Canaries and is approximately 60km long. You can drive from one end of the island to the other in around 1.5 hours.

Lanzarote is known as the land of 1000 volcanoes. It’s pretty obvious from the name that you will find a very unique landscape here. A lot of the island is a Biosphere Reserve meaning the nature and vast lava fields are untouched and protected.

One things that makes Lanzarote unique from the other islands is that all of the buildings are painted white.

This is thanks to the work of local artist, César Manrique, who wanted protect the island’s traditional architectural style. This rule gives the island an elegant and clean feel.

Lanzarote boasts an array of beaches, from volcanic black sand to beautiful soft white sand and incredible natural rock pools for you to swim in.

The island is an exceptional place for sport lovers. You can find most sports here, including freediving/diving, tennis, padel, golf, water sports, cycling, you name it. There are also a lot of mountains and volcanoes for you to hike up.

The Ironman event is held here every year with thousands of international participants taking part. The mountainous terrain of the island alongside the strong northern winds and heat seem to be the perfect place to train for most athletes.

The Canarian Championship surf competitions are held on Famara Beach, Lanzarote so if you love to surf, this could be the island for you.

Lanzarote – Where to Stay

The main tourist areas to stay in are Puerto del Carmen (the most vibrant), Costa Teguise (quieter + windier) and Playa Blanca (older tourists).

If you like to surf, Famara or La Santa would be your best options.

What to expect from visiting La Graciosa

La Graciosa is a tiny island located 2km north of Lanzarote and is definitely worth a visit. It is controlled by the municipality of Teguise in Lanzarote and so some say the 2 islands come as a package deal, others argue it is it’s own paradise.

Either way, you should consider adding it to your list if you fancy a day, or two, in beach heaven.

See here for the perfect 2-day itinerary to La Graciosa. Even if you simply want to go for the day, you can find everything you need to know about this island in my blog.

What can you expect to find in La Graciosa?

Arguably the most beautiful beaches in the Canary Islands (Playa de las Conchas & Montaña Amarilla) with crystal clear, turquoise waters.
The most laid back of the Canary Islands – you’ll instantly feel relaxed once you step of the boat.
You feel like you’ve gone back in time – there are no tarmacked roads, only sand.
The perfect place to escape for a few days

Which Canary Island should I visit?

What can you expect from visiting Fuerteventura?

Fuerteventura is one of the quieter islands, with a relaxed vibe and beautiful beaches. It was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in May 2009 and boasts large sand dunes.

It attracts a lot of surfers; including wind and kite surfers, as the name ‘fuerte ventura’ means strong winds (also means strong fortune). There is a great digital nomad community living in the beach town of Corralejos so if you’re working online, this could be the place for you.

Fuerteventura is the 2nd largest island and takes around 1.5 hours to drive from one end to the other.

Cofete beach, Fuerteventura taken by <a aria-label="Andrea Miotto.
Where to Stay in Fuerteventura

Corralejo is a small vibrant beach town that has become very popular among digital nomads. If you want to meet some fellow long-term travellers, Corralejo is a great place to stay.

For a quieter stay, more suited to families, consider staying in El Cotillo or Costa Calma.

What to expect from visiting Gran Canaria

Like Tenerife, Gran Canaria is one of the most diverse islands in the Canaries. Due to this, it has some crazy microclimates which you should prepare for. If you plan to go hiking, it’s best to bring layers that you can take on and off as you venture through the diverse climates.

The sand dunes of Maspalomas are one of the islands iconic attractions and resemble the dessert, in terms of visuals but also weather conditions. It can be extremely hot during the day, and then temperatures plummet at night time.

Gran Canaria boasts some incredible beaches, especially Playa Las Canteras which is a very popular urban beach on the island. The south end of this beach is ideal for surfing.

What to do in Gran Canaria

Where to stay in Gran Canaria

Playa del Ingles is one of the liveliest places to be in Gran Canaria. It has plenty of bars and restaurants.

If you are looking for stunning beaches with a mix of culture, history and also shops, the capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is one of the best places to stay on the island.

Las Canteras area allows you to stay on the sea front, have access to bars and restaurants, meet other tourists, but also be surrounded by locals. It is also easy to get to from the airport. This is where I would choose to stay!

Alternatively, Maspalomas is a great place to stay with plenty of activities and water sports.

What to expect from visiting Tenerife?

Tenerife is the largest canary island and has a great mix of all of the islands in one. From the green forests in the north to the volcanic landscapes in the south, you’re in for a treat. There are plenty of beaches for you to visit, hikes to explore, and activities for you to do.

The south of Tenerife is hotter and tends to attract the most visitors.

Tenerife is great for families as it has a number of theme and water parks scattered around the island. Adrenaline junkies should go to Costa Adeje for boat tours, scuba, snorkeling and jet skiing activities.

There is also a large digital nomad community in Tenerife.

Things to do in Tenerife

Where to Stay in Tenerife

Playa de las Americas is a vibrant beach town with lots of people aged around 18-35. Here you will meet a lot of other people and it’s a great place to surf and there is an existing night life if you fancy a party. It can be a bit pricier than neighbouring El Medano.

Los Cristianos is one of the main resorts and you can also look at Costa del Silencio and Las Galletas.

If you fancy doing a day trip to La Gomera from Tenerife, there is a full day tour that you can do here.

Which Canary Island Should I Visit?

What to Expect when visiting La Gomera

La Gomera really took me by surprise. I hadn’t seen many photos on Instagram and so I went without any real idea of what to expect and I fell in love.

It’s important to note that the further west you go in the Canary islands, the more obvious the micro climates are. La Gomera is the 3rd smallest island with only 22,500 inhabitants yet the change in weather is quite dramatic.

If you hang around the coastal areas, you will be blessed with sun for over 300 days of the year. Drive 30 minutes into the centre of the island and you will find yourself inside a dense tropical rain forest wearing a rain coat.

It’s crazy.

I really enjoyed visiting the Garajonay rainforest in La Gomera as it is very different to the other islands that are typically dry in landscape.

From the sky you can see the constant patch of clouds that cover the centre of the island, keeping the forest moist. You simply need to pack some layers and you’re good to go.

La Gomera attracts a LOT of hikers. The entire area of the Garajonay National Park is a fascinating hiking area. The island has a mix of deep valleys and steep hills. You can hike along coastal paths, in lush green forests, through red rock or banana plantations and across volcanic landscapes.

There is so much to see that you’ll never get bored hiking in La Gomera. I found this lady’s blog post really helpful as she has hiked many routes and written about what to expect on each one.

Things to do in La Gomera

Visit Garajonay National Park – there are 100’s of walks to do within this national park. You could easily spend a few days here.
Visit the waterfalls inside the National Park.
Hermigua valley
Pescante de Hermigua – the man made sea water swimming pool on the coast
Roque de Agando
Mirador de Abrante – The lookout and the surrounding red rocks!
Drive through Vallehermoso
Punta de los Organos – you will need to take a boat trip to see these! It’s around 25e each for a 4 hour journey.
Valle Gran Rey + Playa del Ingles – the drive down to this valley is more beautiful than the town itself.
Playa Santiago (close to the airport)
San Sebastian de La Gomera – the capital city. There are very colourful houses and nice outdoor terraces to enjoy. Definitely worth a short visit.

Where to Stay in La Gomera

Most of the attractions worth seeing in La Gomera are scattered around the island and so you will need to hire a car. I recommend staying central, making it easy to reach all of the locations mentioned above.

We stayed in Hermigua, which is a beautiful and quiet valley located next to Garajonay National Park. This was the perfect spot for us as we wanted to explore most of the day.

Lots of people opt for Valle Gran Rey, a coastal town on the West of La Gomera. I personally didn’t like the town and don’t understand the hype but each to their own 🙂

Another option is to stay in San Sebastian de La Gomera; a very cute town (the capital of La Gomera) with a vibrant atmosphere.

So, La Palma made its way up to the top of my list when it comes to choosing an island to visit. I was really taken back by its beauty.

La Palma is one of the best places in the world to see the stars, so if you’re like me and love stargazing you’re in for a treat.

The island has probably one of the craziest micro climates of them all. They even have a tunnel that runs from the West side of the island to the East and is it called ‘the weather tunnel’ or ‘el tunel del tiempo’ in Spanish.

It is the CRAZIEST thing I’ve seen, both driving through it and from above at one of the nearby viewpoints. Essentially, it’s sunny on the West side and as you drive through this tunnel, that takes no longer than 30 seconds, you arrive at the East side, completely covered by clouds.

This happens practically every time.

From the viewpoint, you can clearly see the sea of clouds rolling over the top of the tunnel. Nature is a bloody fascinating phenomenon and witnessing this was one of my favourite things to do in La Palma.

Having said that, the constant change in weather temperature is exhausting. I got tired of it pretty quickly. We mistakenly stayed on the East side as it was close to the capital Santa Cruz de La Palma. Our ferry arrived into this port, and the airport was only a 10 minute drive away so it seemed ideal.

However, this side is more prone to be cloudy, so I recommend staying on the west side for guaranteed sun.

Things to do in La Palma

Mirador Astronomico del llano del Jable
Playa de Nogales – the most incredible black beach surrounded by green cliffs!
Bosque de los tilos – waterfall
Roque de los Muchachos – go on an organised tour with Isla Bonita Tours – They are AWESOME! Here you will see the sea of clouds from above
Cascada de los colores
Poris de la Candelaria – A cave with around 15 houses inside!
Playa de Tazacorte
Pico Birigoyo – my all time favourite viewpoint to see the clouds!
Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente
Mirador de la Cumbrecita
Parque natural de Cumbre Vieja

What to expect from visiting El Hierro

The smallest island in the Canary islands (if we don’t count La Graciosa!). El Hierro is often forgotten about and sits in the shadows of the bigger islands.

If you have time, you could pay a short visit to this island too.

I try not to compare any of the islands with one another because they are all so different, hence why I am trying to answer this question “which Canary Island should I visit?” in a detailed blog post. However, I’ll be honest, El Hierro wasn’t my favourite.

I made a real effort to find out all the local spots and secrets and to fully emerge myself into what it is that the locals love about their island.

There were some really cool things to see, including a visit to my first ever RED beach whaaaaat.

I would only recommend going for 3-4 days as there isn’t that much to see.

Things to do in El Hierro

Playa el Verodal – the red beach. You should aim to go around golden hour / sunset and see the cliffs and sand light up red! It’s MAGICAL. See here for more information about this beach.
Pozo de las Calcosas – a man made sea water pool on the coast
Hike in Pico Malpazo
El Sabinar – the trees that grow sideways as a result of the strong winds
Faro de Orchilla – this lighthouse has featured on many National Geographic magazines, especially photos taken here at sunset.
La Restringa – great for fresh fish (try Casa Juan!)
Mirador de Isora
Villa de Valverde (capital)
Natural rock pools; Playa de Tacoron, Charco Los Sargos, Charco manzo
Mirador de la Peña
El charco azul
“The smallest hotel in the world”

Where to stay in El Hierro

The best places to stay are Valverde (the capital city as there is always something open), Las Puntas or La Frontera.

Which Canary Island Should I Visit?

So, there you have it. This took me a bloody long time to create so I really hope you find it valuable and it helps answer your question “Which Canary Island should I visit?”.

I’m sure you can understand now after reading through this blog why I think it’s impossible to answer the question. They are so close together, yet SO different.

The Red beach, El hierro known as Playa del Verodal, is located on the West side of the island. Due to its location, it is the perfect sunset spot and during golden hour, both the sand and the surrounding cliffs light up a powerful red colour.

The red sand gets its colour from the natural materials in the cliffs, and this whole area is a bio reserve of the island.

The currents here are quite dangerous, so it’s probably best if you have a quick paddle in the shallow end and make your way back to the sand.

Red Beach El Hierro – How to Get There

Getting to Playa del Verodal is very straight forward. Simply follow the map. The roads are tarmacked, although quite steep and windy when going up the mountain. The last 500 metres are off-road but it’s in a good condition.

If you decide to stay for sunset, don’t hang around too long afterwards as the windy roads right near the beach are not lit up and it could be quite dangerous driving on them in the dark.

We stayed for golden hour and then watched the sunset from the other point – Arenas Blancas.

What to take

This beach is very secluded so you need to take snacks and water with you. There is also a free BBQ area with lots of seating under cover. If you were planning on having a beach BBQ, Playa el Verodal is great place to do it.

I recommend visiting this beach in the late afternoon and staying to watch the sun go down. The colour of the sand and the cliffs are enhanced during this time and it’s pretty magical to see.

In the next few weeks I will continue to write blog posts re El Hierro, and all the other Canary Islands so keep your eyes peeled.

If you are heading to Lanzarote, I have tons of blog posts for you to have a nosey at.
