Gran Canaria is an island of contrasts, offering everything from towering mountains to golden sand dunes and charming coastal towns. Whether you’re a nature lover, a sunset chaser, or someone looking to soak up the island’s unique charm, here are 5 Incredible Places to Visit in Gran Canaria.

1. Roque Nublo – A Symbol of Gran Canaria

Roque Nublo is one of the island’s most iconic landmarks, standing at 1,813 meters above sea level. This volcanic rock formation offers breathtaking panoramic views of Gran Canaria’s rugged landscape. It’s a favourite among hikers, with a relatively short but rewarding trail leading to the summit.

However, due to recent environmental concerns, access to Roque Nublo is now restricted. The local government has implemented a new policy limiting the number of visitors. You need to request a time and date to visit IN ADVANCE and access will now be via official buses instead of private vehicles. For the latest updates on visiting regulations and shuttle bus schedules, plus reserving your spot, visit this official website of Gran Canaria’s tourism board.

If you know when you are visiting the island and can plan this for ahead, I would definitely recommend going, it’s worth it.

It’s also a fantastic place to watch the sunset, as the sun drops over the layered landscape, creating an incredible show!

5 incredible places to visit in Gran Canaria

2. Pico de las Nieves – The Best Sunset Spot

As the highest peak on the island (1,949 meters), Pico de las Nieves offers some of the most spectacular sunset views in Gran Canaria. On clear days, you can see across the ocean to Tenerife’s Mount Teide. There’s no need to hike to the top, as a scenic road leads to an accessible viewpoint. Watching the sun dip below the horizon from this vantage point is a magical experience, with the surrounding mountains turning shades of orange and pink.

You can of course choose to visit during the day for an equally magical experience, but for me, it’s a sunset spot!

If you prefer, you can opt to go on a guided tour of both Roque Nublo and Pico de las Nieves here: Also visiting the dormant crater of Bandama before admiring breathtaking views from the highest mountain of Gran Canaria. Later, visiting the charming village of Teror, home to the Basilica of the Lady of the Pine.

3. Agaete – A Hidden Gem for Hikers

Agaete, located on the island’s northwest coast, is known for its stunning natural beauty and dramatic mountain landscapes. It’s a great destination for hikers, with trails leading through the lush Tamadaba Natural Park, offering stunning ocean views. Los Berrazales, a valley famous for its coffee plantations and tropical fruit farms, is also worth a visit.

After a day of hiking, visitors can relax at Las Salinas, natural seawater pools carved into volcanic rock, perfect for a refreshing swim. You can also see the sun go down from this spot so it’s the perfect day.

5 incredible places to visit in Gran Canaria

4. Dunas de Maspalomas – A Desert by the Sea

The Maspalomas Dunes are one of Gran Canaria’s most famous natural wonders, resembling a vast desert stretching toward the Atlantic Ocean. However, to protect this fragile ecosystem, walking on the dunes is now prohibited. You can visit the viewpoint and see the dunes with the sea behind them for a beautiful view, and then, if you wish to get closer, you can access designated areas by heading down to the beachfront. This means driving to one of the nearby hotels on the beach, where the dunes meet the sea, and walking from there. The best way to experience this area is to stroll along the shoreline at sunset, watching the golden sands shift with the wind. Can you tell I’m a big fan of the sunset?

5. Puerto de Mogán – The Most Picturesque Town

Known as “Little Venice” for its canals and colourful bougainvillea-covered streets, Puerto de Mogán is one of the most charming coastal towns in Gran Canaria. It boasts a beautiful marina, a golden sandy beach, and plenty of waterfront restaurants serving fresh seafood. If you’re visiting on a Friday, don’t miss the Puerto de Mogán market, where you can shop for local crafts, food products, and souvenirs. Boat trips and snorkeling excursions also depart from here, making it a great spot for a relaxing yet adventurous day.

In Puerto de Mogán, you can opt to go on a cool submarine safari too!

Right next to Puerto de Mogán is a famous sunset spot on the island. If you type in ‘acceso explanada’ this the right direction. You’ll see cars parked there, walk through the park and up onto the cliff edge, and you’ll see other people around. The sun typically sets right infront of you over the water from this spot.

5 must-visit places in La Gomera

La Gomera, one of the lesser-known Canary Islands, is a paradise for nature lovers, hikers, and those seeking a peaceful retreat. With its lush forests, dramatic cliffs, and charming villages, the island offers a unique experience far from the hustle of larger tourist hotspots. Here are 5 must-visit places in La Gomera.

1. Garajonay National Park – A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Garajonay National Park is the heart of La Gomera, a misty, prehistoric laurel forest that feels like stepping into another world. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this park is a haven for hikers, offering well-marked trails that wind through ancient trees and breathtaking viewpoints. One of the best hikes is to Alto de Garajonay, the highest peak on the island (1,487 meters), where you can enjoy panoramic views over La Gomera and even neighboring islands on clear days.

This is probably the coolest place in La Gomera for me, and if you like photography, I would recommend going early morning. If you’re lucky, you’ll capture the light rays coming through the mist, and it’s the most magical view ever! Click on the link to see my Instagram photo to see what I mean!

If you prefer to go on a guided tour of the National Park, you can do so here.

2. San Sebastián de La Gomera – A Town Full of History

The island’s capital, San Sebastián de La Gomera, is rich in history and the best place to learn about its connection to Christopher Columbus, who stopped here before his voyage to the Americas. Visitors can explore Torre del Conde, a well-preserved medieval tower, and the Casa de Colón, a museum dedicated to Columbus’ time on the island. The town also has a relaxed charm, with pleasant cafés, a scenic harbor, and nearby beaches like Playa de la Cueva offering a great spot for a swim.

3. Roque Agando – A Majestic Volcanic Rock

Roque Agando is one of La Gomera’s most striking natural landmarks. This towering volcanic rock formation rises dramatically from the landscape, making it a must-see for photographers and nature enthusiasts. The area surrounding Roque Agando offers incredible viewpoints, with several hiking trails leading through the rugged terrain. It’s particularly breathtaking at sunset when the rock is bathed in golden light, creating a mystical atmosphere.

4. Agulo – The Prettiest Village in La Gomera

Often called the “Jewel of La Gomera,” Agulo is a picturesque village perched above the ocean with cobbled streets and traditional Canarian architecture. The backdrop of towering cliffs and views of Mount Teide on Tenerife make this one of the island’s most photogenic spots. A short drive from the village leads to Mirador de Abrante, a glass-floored viewpoint that offers a thrilling panoramic perspective over Agulo and the Atlantic below. Mirador de Abrante also has the most colouful red landscape, scattered with green vegetation. It’s wild!

5. Los Órganos – Spectacular Coastal Rock Formations

Los Órganos is one of La Gomera’s most fascinating natural wonders. These unique basalt rock formations resemble giant organ pipes and rise dramatically from the ocean. I tried to fly my drone there from the top of a cliff to get some epic footage but nearly lost it as the signal was weak. So, I don’t have my own picture for this one, BUT I took a screenshot of Las Islas Canarias website so you can see that it is incredible.

They can only be seen from the sea, so booking a boat tour from Valle Gran Rey or Playa de Santiago is the best way to experience them. I don’t have a link for the tours and can’t seem to find specific companies that offer them, so I believe your best bet is to visit the ports and ask around 🙂

Bonus tips!

One thing to note about visiting La Gomera, is that the roads are VERY windy. In fact, I don’t think I even remember seeing one straight road. It’s safe to drive, but you do need to be cautious.

If you are on Tenerife island and you just want to visit for the day, you can opt for a full day guided tour around the island of La Gomera!

La Gomera is a hidden gem in the Canary Islands, offering a blend of lush forests, rugged coastlines, and cultural history. Whether you’re hiking through Garajonay National Park, admiring the ocean views from Agulo, or taking a boat trip to Los Órganos, this island promises an unforgettable experience.

1. Playa Blanca’s Promenade

The sun sets over Playa Blanca and its picturesque promenade offers uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean and neighboring islands. As the sun dips below the horizon, you’ll be treated to a mesmerizing display of colors. There are many waterfront cafes to choose from, or take a leisurely stroll along the promenade.

2. Mirador del Río

For a sunset experience that’s both awe-inspiring and romantic, head to Mirador del Río. Perched atop the towering cliffs of northern Lanzarote, this scenic lookout offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including the entire island of La Graciosa. This is hands down one of my favourite viewpoints on the entire island. The fact that you can see a whole island from above amazes me!

It was designed by the renowned artist César Manrique, and provides the perfect backdrop for watching the sun set in all its glory. You don’t have to go inside to have great views, you can also watch it from the neighbouring rocks. Mirador del Río is a must-visit spot for couples and nature enthusiasts alike.

With its dramatic lava formations and lunar-like landscapes, Timanfaya provides a truly unforgettable backdrop for watching the sunset. Whether you embark on a guided hike or simply take in the view from a scenic overlook, Timanfaya National Park promises an immersive sunset experience unlike any other.

4. Papagayo Beach

For a laid-back sunset experience by the sea, Papagayo Beach is the place to be. Located on the South coast, close to Playa Blanca, it’s in the perfect spot to witness the sun go down. Known for its pristine sands and crystal-clear waters, this idyllic beach is a great place to spend the entire afternoon.

As the sky is illuminated with vibrant colors, reflecting off the tranquil waters, you’ll find yourself immersed in the beauty of the moment.
I’ve put together a list of the best places to eat & drink in Lanzarote with the help of some of my good friends who live on the island!

** Some of these photos are not from the specific restaurants mentioned. I don’t have photos of them all, but I don’t like to write blogs without pictures as I find them hard to read 😛 ! **

I have picked a handful of restaurants from different parts of the island. This is so you have a few options close to where you’re staying, or where you are out exploring for the day. I have listed them under the town they are in to keep it organised.

Best restaurants in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

Toro Grill Asador ($$-$$$)

El Toro is a true beefateria for lovers and connoisseurs of Black Angus beef steaks. They serve classic steaks from marble meat, popular all over the world: Premium Ribeye, flavorful Picanha, highly marbled Tomahawk, and many more. The food the serve is fresh, and extremely tasty. I highly recommend a visit to Toro Grill Asador if staying in Puerto del Carmen.

Cofradia, Old Town Harbour ($$$)

Fancy some fresh fish, tapas, or seafood? Head to Cofradia. With delicious food and an outdoor terrace overlooking the boats in the harbour, you have yourself the perfect spot!

El Goloso, Biosfera Shopping Centre ($)

This restaurant is located in the main shopping centre of Puerto del Carmen, on the same floor as McDonalds. It probably isn’t somewhere you would usually think about going to eat, but the pizzas here are probably one of the best pizzas on the island!

The pastas are also homemade.

La cascada, Puerto del Carmen ($$$)

This restaurant is one of my good friends favourite restaurant. She swear that the ravioli starter de rabo de torro is one of the best things to eat on the menu.

Other items that this restaurant is known for is their meat; specifically their cordero or wagyu.

La Veletta, Old Town Harbour ($$$)

Right next to Cofradia, is La Veletta. It has a very similar vibe to its neighbouring restaurant and is equally delicious!

L’Italiano ($)

One of my new favourite restaurants is L’Italiano, located on the strip.

I usually avoid eating on the avenida as its generally known as a tourist attraction, thus the quality of food isn’t always great.

However, L’Italiano is a newish restaurant, and it’s delicious.

I had a mushroom and truffle pasta and OMG. I can’t wait to go back and eat it again. It’s called Fusili Porcini. The desserts are also delicious, I especially loved the chocolate fondant cake, and the vanilla pannacota!

One of the nicest pasta dishes I’ve eaten. Highly recommend – especially because the prices are also great!

Vino+ ($$$)

Vino+ has become a hotspot in PDC and so it’s necessary to reserve a table or you won’t get in. This place is pretty overpriced to be honest but it has a great atmosphere and both the food and service is good!

Best Places to Eat & Drink in Lanzarote

Lava bar ($$)

The Lava bar is in the same square as Vino+, has live music, great cocktails and a ‘grill your own meat’ option on your own personal hot plate! This is a great place to do something a little different!

P.S. The cocktails are amazing and the guy can make you anything you want if you ask for it! I had a passion fruit mojito that wasn’t on the menu and it was that good, I had 2 more 😉

La cantina – Mexican ($$)

Mexican cuisine has become one of my favourites over the past few years so I have to include a good Mexican restaurant in this list! La Cantina has really good food and is on the main strip of puerto del carmen.

Enjoy ($)

Enjoy is an Asian restaurant along the main strip in Puerto del Carmen and the food here is very tasty.

You can order single dishes or they also have the option to order menus to share between 2-6 people.

They include a selection of dishes and you usually end up taking home a doggy bag. My favourites are the duck & pancake, the spring rolls, and anything to do with noodles.

They also have a Teppanyaki station, but you mostly likely need to pre book this as it is very popular. The chef cooks your food for you infront of your face.

The Black Buffalo ($)

If you like ribs you have to check this place out! The BBQ ribs are great and the price is extremely affordable! We had a sharing platter and it was huge, we couldn’t finish it. They have a jack daniels BBQ sauce which is delicious and definitely worth a try!

Dos Mil Bakery

A cafe on the main strip in Puerto del Carmen is Dos Mil.

The prices are great, they have indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the beach across the road.

There is a great selection of sandwiches, pastries and cakes and they also have fresh orange juice, and other juices. A great place for breakfast.

Best restaurants in Playa Honda Lanzarote

Casa Tere, Playa Honda ($$-$$$)

The restaurant is in a lovely location on the promenade at Playa Honda and serves some of the best tapas on the island. The food is all homemade and very delicious. Give the goats cheese tarts and meatballs a try!

Casa Tere is frequented by locals as well as tourists.

La Orilla Beach Bar, Playa Honda ($$$)

Good for cocktails & picoteo (small bites)

*Photo taken from La Orilla IG page

The food and cocktails here are very tasty! The downside is the portion sizes of the meals are rather small, and quite expensive. However, it’s a beautiful place to sit and enjoy the view over the beach and the quality of the products is great!

Best Places to Eat & Drink in Lanzarote

La Ópera – Playa Honda ($$)

Located in Playa Honda close to Deiland shopping center, with plenty of parking. They have a great selection of lunch specials and it is a popular spot among the locals. Favourite items include their meat, fish, ribs and wine.

Best restaurants in Arrecife Lanzarote

Restaurante Cala de Luis Leon, El Charco ($$-$$$)

Luis Leon is a well known chef on the island and so you can expect to eat a great meal here. The restaurant is located in El Charco de San Gines in Arrecife, which is a beautiful harbour where all the small boats dock. There are many restaurants in the area and there is a great atmosphere.

The croquettes, tomato bread, burgers, ribs and steak are all to be recommended.

La Rustica ($)

A delicious Italian restaurant in the capital city of Lanzarote. The prices are great and so is the food!

La Lolita Bakery ($)

This small bakery has a great selection of cakes, pastries and sandwiches.

The prices are extremely competitive.

They also have good coffee, fresh orange juice and a few cooked items. I love this bakery for breakfast!

Best restaurants in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote

Bon Bon Cafe

One of my favourite cafes on the island is Bon Bon cafe in Costa Teguise.

*photo taken from Bon Bon cafe’s IG page

They have a very colourful menu, ranging from healthy avocado toasts, to deliciously unhealthy pancakes coated in nutella.

The burgers are also fantastic, my favourite is the one that comes with goats cheese.

You have to try the pancakes here. I usually take someone else with me and share a pancake as a dessert post meal!

Suculenta Cafe

If Bon Bon is packed, and it probably will be, Suculenta Cafe also has a delicious menu.

Be aware that the wait time is usually pretty long here.

Hopefully they’ll add some more staff to the floor.

My friend and I tried a selection of toasts and all of them were delicious.

They also have fresh juices, burgers, smoothie bowls etc.

I’d definitely recommend the food here, the service not as much.

Best restaurants in Arrieta, Lanzarote

El Pisquito, Arrieta ($$-$$$)

If you enjoy eating tapas, this restaurant in Arrieta is a great place to go! It’s located on the seafront and has some of the best fish and octopus on the island.

Another local restaurant in Arrieta is El Amanecer.

This restaurant is very popular among the locals. They have lots of indoor seating, so it’s perfect for a windy (or extremely hot) day, while still having large glass windows for you to admire the views.

They have a number of delicious tapas dishes available, also local soups, and a great selection of fish.

Best restaurants in Puerto Calero & Yaiza

La Taberna del Puerto, Puerto Calero ($$)

Located in the beautiful harbour of Puerto Calero is La Taberna del Puerto. This restaurant is famous for its paellas and other rice dishes and is said to serve the best in the area.

If you like fish, you should try the classic fideua dish; fresh fish, a variety of tapas (appetizers) and salad.

Spanish paella

Natural Nada Mas ($$) Puerto Calero

One of my favourite places to eat breakfast in Lanzarote is Natural Nada Mas.

The literal meaning of the name is natural, nothing more. This is exactly what you should expect to eat here.

This small Italian restaurants is tucked away upstairs, with a balcony overlooking the boats in the marina. If you like fresh salads, you are in for a treat. The ingredients are delicious and the portion sizes are humongous. I ordered a salad with burrata, and it was bigger than the size of my head. Really tasty food here!

A very popular spot in Playa Blanca among the locals and tourists alike. If you fancy fresh fish or seafood, this is the place for you! I also love the Lasana here, because they use a lot of bechamel sauce and I think that’s the best part lol. In summer, they have a sprinkler system above your head to spray tiny bits of water on you to keep you cool.

It is located right next to the ocean and can fit a lot of people.

I’ve been in the Canary Islands for a few months and a question I’ve been asked a lot is “which Canary Island should I visit?”.

So, here goes.

In this blog post you’ll find out what you can expect to find on each one, and from there you can make your own decision on where you want to go.

I don’t think you can compare one to another & one will be better suited to you based on your own preferences.

The Canary Islands

The canaries are a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, just 100km off the coast of Morocco, Africa. Their location means that the weather is warm all year round, making them the perfect winter escape and a fantastic summer holiday destination.

Formed of 8 main islands, across a geographical landscape of only 473km, they are so close together, yet they couldn’t be more different.

Each one has its own unique offering.

From Lanzarote; the island of 1000 volcanoes to La Gomera’s dense rainforests, you will find a diverse mix of landscapes. So, when you ask me, “Which Canary island is your favourite?” or “Which Canary Island should I visit?” – it’s impossible to say.

If you have time, I highly recommend checking them all out!

We’ll Start at the top right of the map and make our way down, so first up is Lanzarote and its neighbouring island of La Graciosa!

Which Canary Island Should I Visit? – Lanzarote & La Graciosa

What can you expect from visiting Lanzarote?

Lanzarote is the fourth largest island in the Canaries and is approximately 60km long. You can drive from one end of the island to the other in around 1.5 hours.

Lanzarote is known as the land of 1000 volcanoes. It’s pretty obvious from the name that you will find a very unique landscape here. A lot of the island is a Biosphere Reserve meaning the nature and vast lava fields are untouched and protected.

One things that makes Lanzarote unique from the other islands is that all of the buildings are painted white.

This is thanks to the work of local artist, César Manrique, who wanted protect the island’s traditional architectural style. This rule gives the island an elegant and clean feel.

Lanzarote boasts an array of beaches, from volcanic black sand to beautiful soft white sand and incredible natural rock pools for you to swim in.

The island is an exceptional place for sport lovers. You can find most sports here, including freediving/diving, tennis, padel, golf, water sports, cycling, you name it. There are also a lot of mountains and volcanoes for you to hike up.

The Ironman event is held here every year with thousands of international participants taking part. The mountainous terrain of the island alongside the strong northern winds and heat seem to be the perfect place to train for most athletes.

The Canarian Championship surf competitions are held on Famara Beach, Lanzarote so if you love to surf, this could be the island for you.

Lanzarote – Where to Stay

The main tourist areas to stay in are Puerto del Carmen (the most vibrant), Costa Teguise (quieter + windier) and Playa Blanca (older tourists).

If you like to surf, Famara or La Santa would be your best options.

What to expect from visiting La Graciosa

La Graciosa is a tiny island located 2km north of Lanzarote and is definitely worth a visit. It is controlled by the municipality of Teguise in Lanzarote and so some say the 2 islands come as a package deal, others argue it is it’s own paradise.

Either way, you should consider adding it to your list if you fancy a day, or two, in beach heaven.

See here for the perfect 2-day itinerary to La Graciosa. Even if you simply want to go for the day, you can find everything you need to know about this island in my blog.

What can you expect to find in La Graciosa?

Arguably the most beautiful beaches in the Canary Islands (Playa de las Conchas & Montaña Amarilla) with crystal clear, turquoise waters.
The most laid back of the Canary Islands – you’ll instantly feel relaxed once you step of the boat.
You feel like you’ve gone back in time – there are no tarmacked roads, only sand.
The perfect place to escape for a few days

Which Canary Island should I visit?

What can you expect from visiting Fuerteventura?

Fuerteventura is one of the quieter islands, with a relaxed vibe and beautiful beaches. It was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in May 2009 and boasts large sand dunes.

It attracts a lot of surfers; including wind and kite surfers, as the name ‘fuerte ventura’ means strong winds (also means strong fortune). There is a great digital nomad community living in the beach town of Corralejos so if you’re working online, this could be the place for you.

Fuerteventura is the 2nd largest island and takes around 1.5 hours to drive from one end to the other.

Cofete beach, Fuerteventura taken by <a aria-label="Andrea Miotto.
Where to Stay in Fuerteventura

Corralejo is a small vibrant beach town that has become very popular among digital nomads. If you want to meet some fellow long-term travellers, Corralejo is a great place to stay.

For a quieter stay, more suited to families, consider staying in El Cotillo or Costa Calma.

What to expect from visiting Gran Canaria

Like Tenerife, Gran Canaria is one of the most diverse islands in the Canaries. Due to this, it has some crazy microclimates which you should prepare for. If you plan to go hiking, it’s best to bring layers that you can take on and off as you venture through the diverse climates.

The sand dunes of Maspalomas are one of the islands iconic attractions and resemble the dessert, in terms of visuals but also weather conditions. It can be extremely hot during the day, and then temperatures plummet at night time.

Gran Canaria boasts some incredible beaches, especially Playa Las Canteras which is a very popular urban beach on the island. The south end of this beach is ideal for surfing.

What to do in Gran Canaria

Where to stay in Gran Canaria

Playa del Ingles is one of the liveliest places to be in Gran Canaria. It has plenty of bars and restaurants.

If you are looking for stunning beaches with a mix of culture, history and also shops, the capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is one of the best places to stay on the island.

Las Canteras area allows you to stay on the sea front, have access to bars and restaurants, meet other tourists, but also be surrounded by locals. It is also easy to get to from the airport. This is where I would choose to stay!

Alternatively, Maspalomas is a great place to stay with plenty of activities and water sports.

What to expect from visiting Tenerife?

Tenerife is the largest canary island and has a great mix of all of the islands in one. From the green forests in the north to the volcanic landscapes in the south, you’re in for a treat. There are plenty of beaches for you to visit, hikes to explore, and activities for you to do.

The south of Tenerife is hotter and tends to attract the most visitors.

Tenerife is great for families as it has a number of theme and water parks scattered around the island. Adrenaline junkies should go to Costa Adeje for boat tours, scuba, snorkeling and jet skiing activities.

There is also a large digital nomad community in Tenerife.

Where to Stay in Tenerife

Playa de las Americas is a vibrant beach town with lots of people aged around 18-35. Here you will meet a lot of other people and it’s a great place to surf and there is an existing night life if you fancy a party. It can be a bit pricier than neighbouring El Medano.

Los Cristianos is one of the main resorts and you can also look at Costa del Silencio and Las Galletas.

If you fancy doing a day trip to La Gomera from Tenerife, there is a full day tour that you can do here.

Which Canary Island Should I Visit?

What to Expect when visiting La Gomera

La Gomera really took me by surprise. I hadn’t seen many photos on Instagram and so I went without any real idea of what to expect and I fell in love.

It’s important to note that the further west you go in the Canary islands, the more obvious the micro climates are. La Gomera is the 3rd smallest island with only 22,500 inhabitants yet the change in weather is quite dramatic.

If you hang around the coastal areas, you will be blessed with sun for over 300 days of the year. Drive 30 minutes into the centre of the island and you will find yourself inside a dense tropical rain forest wearing a rain coat.

It’s crazy.

I really enjoyed visiting the Garajonay rainforest in La Gomera as it is very different to the other islands that are typically dry in landscape.

From the sky you can see the constant patch of clouds that cover the centre of the island, keeping the forest moist. You simply need to pack some layers and you’re good to go.

La Gomera attracts a LOT of hikers. The entire area of the Garajonay National Park is a fascinating hiking area. The island has a mix of deep valleys and steep hills. You can hike along coastal paths, in lush green forests, through red rock or banana plantations and across volcanic landscapes.

There is so much to see that you’ll never get bored hiking in La Gomera. I found this lady’s blog post really helpful as she has hiked many routes and written about what to expect on each one.

Things to do in La Gomera

Visit Garajonay National Park – there are 100’s of walks to do within this national park. You could easily spend a few days here.
Visit the waterfalls inside the National Park.
Hermigua valley
Pescante de Hermigua – the man made sea water swimming pool on the coast
Roque de Agando
Mirador de Abrante – The lookout and the surrounding red rocks!
Drive through Vallehermoso
Punta de los Organos – you will need to take a boat trip to see these! It’s around 25e each for a 4 hour journey.
Valle Gran Rey + Playa del Ingles – the drive down to this valley is more beautiful than the town itself.
Playa Santiago (close to the airport)
San Sebastian de La Gomera – the capital city. There are very colourful houses and nice outdoor terraces to enjoy. Definitely worth a short visit.

Where to Stay in La Gomera

Most of the attractions worth seeing in La Gomera are scattered around the island and so you will need to hire a car. I recommend staying central, making it easy to reach all of the locations mentioned above.

We stayed in Hermigua, which is a beautiful and quiet valley located next to Garajonay National Park. This was the perfect spot for us as we wanted to explore most of the day.

Lots of people opt for Valle Gran Rey, a coastal town on the West of La Gomera. I personally didn’t like the town and don’t understand the hype but each to their own 🙂

Another option is to stay in San Sebastian de La Gomera; a very cute town (the capital of La Gomera) with a vibrant atmosphere.

Which Canary Island Should I Visit?

What to expect from visiting La Palma

So, La Palma made its way up to the top of my list when it comes to choosing an island to visit. I was really taken back by its beauty.

La Palma is one of the best places in the world to see the stars, so if you’re like me and love stargazing you’re in for a treat.

The island has probably one of the craziest micro climates of them all. They even have a tunnel that runs from the West side of the island to the East and is it called ‘the weather tunnel’ or ‘el tunel del tiempo’ in Spanish.

It is the CRAZIEST thing I’ve seen, both driving through it and from above at one of the nearby viewpoints. Essentially, it’s sunny on the West side and as you drive through this tunnel, that takes no longer than 30 seconds, you arrive at the East side, completely covered by clouds.

This happens practically every time.

From the viewpoint, you can clearly see the sea of clouds rolling over the top of the tunnel. Nature is a bloody fascinating phenomenon and witnessing this was one of my favourite things to do in La Palma.

Having said that, the constant change in weather temperature is exhausting. I got tired of it pretty quickly. We mistakenly stayed on the East side as it was close to the capital Santa Cruz de La Palma. Our ferry arrived into this port, and the airport was only a 10 minute drive away so it seemed ideal.

However, this side is more prone to be cloudy, so I recommend staying on the west side for guaranteed sun.

Things to do in La Palma

Mirador Astronomico del llano del Jable
Playa de Nogales – the most incredible black beach surrounded by green cliffs!
Bosque de los tilos – waterfall
Roque de los Muchachos – go on an organised tour with Isla Bonita Tours – They are AWESOME! Here you will see the sea of clouds from above
Cascada de los colores
Poris de la Candelaria – A cave with around 15 houses inside!
Playa de Tazacorte
Pico Birigoyo – my all time favourite viewpoint to see the clouds!
Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente
Mirador de la Cumbrecita
Parque natural de Cumbre Vieja

What to expect from visiting El Hierro

The smallest island in the Canary islands (if we don’t count La Graciosa!). El Hierro is often forgotten about and sits in the shadows of the bigger islands.

If you have time, you could pay a short visit to this island too.

I try not to compare any of the islands with one another because they are all so different, hence why I am trying to answer this question “which Canary Island should I visit?” in a detailed blog post. However, I’ll be honest, El Hierro wasn’t my favourite.

I made a real effort to find out all the local spots and secrets and to fully emerge myself into what it is that the locals love about their island.

There were some really cool things to see, including a visit to my first ever RED beach whaaaaat.

I would only recommend going for 3-4 days as there isn’t that much to see.

Things to do in El Hierro

Playa el Verodal – the red beach. You should aim to go around golden hour / sunset and see the cliffs and sand light up red! It’s MAGICAL. See here for more information about this beach.
Pozo de las Calcosas – a man made sea water pool on the coast
Hike in Pico Malpazo
El Sabinar – the trees that grow sideways as a result of the strong winds
Faro de Orchilla – this lighthouse has featured on many National Geographic magazines, especially photos taken here at sunset.
La Restringa – great for fresh fish (try Casa Juan!)
Mirador de Isora
Villa de Valverde (capital)
Natural rock pools; Playa de Tacoron, Charco Los Sargos, Charco manzo
Mirador de la Peña
El charco azul
“The smallest hotel in the world”

Where to stay in El Hierro

The best places to stay are Valverde (the capital city as there is always something open), Las Puntas or La Frontera.

Which Canary Island Should I Visit?

So, there you have it. This took me a bloody long time to create so I really hope you find it valuable and it helps answer your question “Which Canary Island should I visit?”.

I’m sure you can understand now after reading through this blog why I think it’s impossible to answer the question. They are so close together, yet SO different. My favourite island may not be your favourite, and so I hope that with this information you can choose the one that you think will be right for you.

If you head to the Canarias and use any tips from this blog, I’d love to know!

The Red beach, El hierro known as Playa del Verodal, is located on the West side of the island. Due to its location, it is the perfect sunset spot and during golden hour, both the sand and the surrounding cliffs light up a powerful red colour.

The red sand gets its colour from the natural materials in the cliffs, and this whole area is a bio reserve of the island.

The currents here are quite dangerous, so it’s probably best if you have a quick paddle in the shallow end and make your way back to the sand.

Red Beach El Hierro – How to Get There

Getting to Playa del Verodal is very straight forward. Simply follow the map. The roads are tarmacked, although quite steep and windy when going up the mountain. The last 500 metres are off-road but it’s in a good condition.

If you decide to stay for sunset, don’t hang around too long afterwards as the windy roads right near the beach are not lit up and it could be quite dangerous driving on them in the dark.

We stayed for golden hour and then watched the sunset from the other point – Arenas Blancas.

What to take

This beach is very secluded so you need to take snacks and water with you. There is also a free BBQ area with lots of seating under cover. If you were planning on having a beach BBQ, Playa el Verodal is great place to do it.

I recommend visiting this beach in the late afternoon and staying to watch the sun go down. The colour of the sand and the cliffs are enhanced during this time and it’s pretty magical to see.

In the next few weeks I will continue to write blog posts re El Hierro, and all the other Canary Islands so keep your eyes peeled.

La Graciosa island is located 2km north of Lanzarote and is definitely worth a visit. Here is the perfect itinerary for a 2 day trip to La Graciosa. If you only fancy going for a day, you can also use the information from this blog post to pick your favourite spots and discover everything you need to know about getting to them!

Firstly, from Lanzarote you will need to get the boat. It leaves from the small town of Orzola, located in the North East of the the island. There are 2 boat companies; Lineas Romero and Biosfera Express. Both companies cost the same amount of money and have different timetables throughout the day. Lineas Romero leave on the hour, and Biosfera Express leave 30 min past the hour.

A round-trip ticket for non-residents costs €26 and for residents of Lanzarote there is a 75% discount, making the trip a cheap €6.5!

You can check the ferry times for both companies here:

https://www.lineasromero.com/en

https://biosferaexpress.com/en/index.html

Getting to Orzola

If you have a hire car, drive up to Orzola and park in the designated free parking area for ferry users. There are workers who will show you where to leave your car.

If you need to take the bus, you can find the bus timetable here.

** It’s important to note that the last bus back from Orzola to Arrecife leaves at 6.10pm. You would need to get the boat with Biosfera Express at 5.30pm to get back in time. Make sure you choose the right boat company based on your own journey!**

Where to Stay in La Graciosa

Take a morning Ferry from Orzola to La Graciosa island.

Once you arrive, check into your accomodation and ask if you can leave your belongings. I stayed at La Pension Enriqueta and it cost €35 for 2 people for 1 night. For 3 people it cost €40 for 1 night.

Finding a place to stay on La Graciosa can be quite challenging. Many of the smaller apartments don’t come up on Booking.com so you have to get Googling and then call up the properties in order to make a reservation.

If you are going in summer, make sure to book far in advance as there is very little options.

Here are a few places you can look to stay: La Pension Enriqueta, El Girasol, El Varadero. If you want to stay 2 nights or more; Apartamentos Cuesta del salado.

2 Day Trip to La Graciosa – What to Do

You have two options, either rent a 4×4 or hire a bike. Both are visible from the port.

The 4×4 can be hired for the entire day or you can pay for single/round trip journeys to one location. A single leg costs €5pp. So a round trip to one of the beaches would be €10pp. The 4×4’s come with a driver, you cannot drive them yourself.

If you want to hire a bike, head to El Graciosero’s bike shop, located opposite the church/supermarket. The owner is so friendly and can speak a bit of English too.

Here you will hire a bike for the entire day for just €10! The bikes come with a basket for your belongings and a seat cover. If they are not already on the bike, simply ask for it and he will be happy to help.

TIP! If it makes things easier for you, the word basket in Spanish is ‘cesta’.

Once you have your bike, head to the supermarket opposite, stock up on water for the day and any snacks. If you wish to take a sandwich with you, head to the Pasteleria, located to the right-hand side of the port, near Restaurant Girasol.

Here you can find all different types of fresh sandwiches (french bread) and they only cost €2.

2 Day Trip to La Graciosa – Where to Go

(see day 2 below for more recommendations)

Playa de Las Conchas

Now that you have everything ready for your day trip, you’re going to head to the opposite side of the island to Playa de Las Conchas. This is one of my favourite beaches on the island.

How to Get to Playa de Las Conchas

Face the town, with the sea behind you and head north. You will see the clear road where the 4×4 also drive. Continue straight on this road until you come to a fork in the road.

There is a small sign pointing right which reads ‘playa de las conchas’ – head in that direction.

The bike ride to get there can be a little challenging as there seems to be a constant incline. However, there are also a few big hills that you get to fly down and this is a great opportunity to rest the legs.

The bike ride takes around 35/40 minutes each way.

As you come down the big hill, you will notice that there is a bike rack, and most probably a few bikes parked, to the left hand side. Don’t stop here – keep biking straight towards the red mountain to get to Playa de las Conchas.

Leave your bike in the racks, take off your seat cover and head to the beach.

This place is OUT OF THIS WORLD. The soft white sand, the red mountain in the background, the turquoise waters and the view overlooking the tiny island of Isla de Montaña in the distance. I rate this beach a 10/10.

Take your time to soak in the views and the rays of sunlight. If you don’t like to sit down for too long on the beach, you can hike the red mountain behind you for an epic view of the beach from above. I personally have sore legs from the bike so prefer to chill on the beach.

TIP! Be careful, the current at this side of the island can be crazy!

What’s Next?

After a few hours at Playa de las Conchas make your way back to the main town of Caleta de Sebo.

Once you arrive back into town, leave your bikes and have a slow wander around. This town is so unique, as there are no real roads, simply ones made out of sand, surrounded by white houses. It’s a really cool place to snap some photos.

Then head to one of the sea-front bars or restaurants for a cold drink. This is a beautiful place to sit as the boats come in and children play in the shallow waters of the port.

This small beach is also way safer for swimming if you didn’t brave the crazy waves at the other side of the island. It’s the perfect place to refresh before getting ready for dinner.

Watching the Sunset in La Graciosa

The very best place to watch the sunset would be towards Montaña Amarilla, however it is a bit of a trek to get there in time. I recommend walking towards the south of the island, and watching the sunset infront of the Riscos de Famara, Lanzarote.

If you face towards the sea, head to your right, past the houses and restaurants and out towards the open land. Stick to the coast line and you will find a beautiful beach that overlooks the cliffs.

This is a beautiful place to watch the sunset.

Where to Eat in La Graciosa

There are a number of restaurants to choose from and most are of a similar price range.

I recommend eating at El Girasol or Casa Chano.

We ate a paella at El Girasol which was delicious. We ordered garlic bread and huevos rotos as a starter, Paella to share as a main and 2 drinks each.

It came to a total of €44 which is very affordable. The best part was the restaurant has a big balcony that is overlooking the sea.

It’s a beautiful spot and great food.

La Graciosa can be a great place to star gaze depending on the weather. There is very little light polution on the island so if you enjoy astrology, consider walking up into the open land and admiring the stars.

Day 2 in La Graciosa

If you are up for it, you should wake up early to watch the sunrise. There is something very special about being up earlier than the crowds in La Graciosa. The town in the early morning is tranquil. Things are still. Things are beautiful.

If you want to watch the sunrise, head to the North East of the town, towards the 3 rocks that sit between La Graciosa and Lanzarote.

The sun rises from behind these rocks and lights up the island. You will have a front row SEAt to the sunrise from this spot 😛 It is called ‘Punta del Sordo’

After sunrise, head to El Saladero for breakfast. It is a cute cafe on the seafront which has everything you need.

2 day trip to La Graciosa

Once you’re filled up, make another visit to La Pasteleria to stock up on your sandwiches for the day. Grab a big bottle of water and any other snacks and make your way on foot to Montaña Amarilla.

The walk takes just under 1 hour and is well worth the trip.

Montaña Amarilla & Playa de La Francesa

TIP! Don’t hire a bike to go to Montaña Amarilla – the dirt roads are too sandy and you’ll spend most of the time pushing it.

On your way, you’ll go past Playa de La Francesa. This beach is also beautiful. There are usually a few boats out in the water and lots of families around. However, if you go early enough, you’ll most likely have this place to yourself.

Keep walking past Playa de La Francesa and you’ll eventually end up at Montaña Amarilla. You’ll know you’ve made it once you get there. The crystal clear turquoise waters are below the yellow mountain and it really is a picturesque location!

If you fancy an adventure, you can walk to the other side of the mountain and you’ll find another beautiful spot for a swim.

Relax on the beach for a few hours, or if you are more of an active chap who can’t sit still for too long, maybe you’ll enjoy snorkelling or climbing up to the top of Montaña Amarilla for an awesome view of La Graciosa from above.

Head back to the port with plenty of time to spare. Between October – May the last boat back to Lanzarote is 6pm, and in summer it is 7pm.

Before getting on the boat, take some time to cool down after your walk back and enjoy a drink in one of the bars. You can see your ferry from here so if you’re like me and get a little stressy that you’ll miss your transport, it’s the perfect place to be.

So, you’re in Lanzarote or are coming to visit and are wondering how to find el bosquecillo. The good news is, it’s really easy.

The Bosquecillo is hidden from the main road so you wouldn’t know it was there unless you’ve heard about it. This makes it pretty special.

There are barbeque areas at the top if you want to take a picnic with you and you’ll be joined by lots of local families who spend a few hours up there taking in the views.

The bosquecillo is hands down my favourite view point on Lanzarote and I highly recommend going to check it out.

If you are heading to the island, be sure to check out my other helpful blog posts here!

How to find El Bosquecillo, Lanzarote

You’ll be happy to hear that “El Bosquecillo” actually shows up on Google Maps now!

It’s up towards Haria and the best way to find it is using Maps. This is because the turning up to El Bosquecillo isn’t very clear from the main road. It’s easy to miss.

Things to look out for: The Giant ball shaped landmark on the hilltop (radar station) + the restaurant Los Helechos located on the top of the hill overlooking Haria below.

Things to know

Getting to the Bosquecillo can be a little bit challenging, especially if you have a small car. The dirt road is only wide enough for one car, so if you unfortunately meet another one coming in the opposite direction, one of you will need to reverse. I personally would refuse as I’m not good at going backwards, especially on a tiny dirt road with potholes! 😛

In terms of the conditions of the terrain, it’s doable for small cars. There is just one small part that is a bit trickier to navigate but you can do it. Once you arrive at the fork in the road, just after the farm on your right hand-side, turn right. There is a car park once you arrive.

PHOTO TIP! There is a really cool rock that seems to have been created (by mother nature) for Instagram. You’ll see what I mean you get there. It’s the perfect “insta rock” – To find it, when you arrive at the car park, walk towards the cliffs. On your right hand side you will see a play park, and you are going to walk left up the hill. Keep walking for a few minutes and you’ll find it.

I don’t want to spoil it so I’m not going to show you a photo of it!

When is the best time to visit El Bosquecillo?

The best time to visit El Bosquecillo is definitely just before sunset. It is the perfect spot to watch the sun go down over Famara and the rest of the island.

If you decide to go to El Bosquecillo, please let me know what you think of it in the comments below or send me a message on my Instagram page, linked here:

One of the most under-visited spots on the island are the natural rock pools Lanzarote. It’s completely off the beaten track and most tourists don’t even know they exist.

In a way, I want to keep this place hidden, but at the same time it’s my favourite place on the island and I believe the natural rock pools should be enjoyed by most.

So, what I’ve decided to do is tell you where the area is and how to get there, and those of you who truly wish to splash around in these pools will make the effort to find them once you arrive at the location! 🙂

If you are planning a trip to Lanzarote, make sure to check out my other blog posts! Best places to visit, beaches, restaurants, hikes, you name it.

Even if I wanted to tell you where each of the specific pools are that I have personally taken photos of, I couldn’t! I have been 3 times so far this year and each time I have ended up at a different pool (by accident!).

It is really hard to tell the difference from the dirt road at the top.

The stretch of rock pools runs across 2km and so you have a fair share of pools to choose from. There are deep pools suitable for swimming in, other shallow ones great for paddling or rock pooling.

How long does it take to get to the natural rock pools Lanzarote?

Duration

Depending on where you decide to go, and which car you have, you will need to walk anywhere between 10 minutes to 1+ hour. The terrain is suitable for 4×4 but not small cars (unless you go to the other side – keep reading)

How to get to the natural rock pools Lanzarote

If you type “charcones” into Google Maps, you’ll see where they are. After the salt fields, driving in the direction of Playa Blanca, you will drive past a petrol station on your left. Keep driving for another 200m or so and on your right you’ll see a clear dirt road.

Drive down the road, and depending what car you have, it’s time to either park and set off walking, or brave the horrendous terrain!

Is it possible to drive to the natural rock pools Lanzarote with a small car?

The journey to the natural rock pools is quite challenging as the dirt roads are not suitable for small cars (see below for info on what to do if you have a small car). There are extremely deep pot hotels and huge rocks in the way of the road. I don’t recommend driving down this road if you don’t have a 4×4.

Once you’ve parked, walk left, towards Playa Blanca. You will find numerous pools along the way. Pick one that you like the look of and jump in!

Another option for smaller cars, is to enter from the other side. There is an abandoned hotel and this road it way easier to drive on. The only reason I even mentioned the first way is because I personally prefer the pools at that side but these ones are still beautiful.

Type ‘hotel en ruinas’ into Google Maps.

Drive towards the Playa Blanca roundabout, turn right onto El Faro Pechuigera road, drive all the way around past Montaña Roja and onto the new-looking roads that clearly were never finsihed.

After a few minutes you will see an entrance to the dirt road on your left. You will need to drive up to the roundabout and turn round in order to access the entrance.

This dirt road is in MUCH better condition, and is fine for smaller cars, with caution. Park at the abandoned hotel, or before if you’re not feeling the off-road drive.

Directly in front of the hotel there are some pools, and if you want to find some more, set off walking to your right.

TIP! Never go to the Charcones at high tide. The waves are extremely powerful, and in fact, deadly. Many people have been pulled out by the tides and have never returned. Be smart.

Check the tide times for the Charcones here.

What to take with you to the natural rock pools Lanzarote

Make sure you take enough water with you as there are no shops near by. You will need suncream and a hat and any snacks for the day!

If you have water shoes, it might be best to take them. In some of the rockpools are sea urchins!

Caldera Blanca is a giant crater overlooking the famous Timanfaya National Park. In fact, it is the largest crater on the island.

The greatest bonus about visiting Caldera Blanca is that it is part of the National Park, however it is under a different protection, meaning you can visit it without restrictions!

This crater is huge! You can walk all the way around the top and see 360 views of the island from here. It overlooks both Famara/La Graciosa and the National Park of Timanfaya.

How long does it take to climb Caldera Blanca Lanzarote?

This is a tricky question to answer because it depends solely on your level of fitness, and whether you stop to take tons of photos like I do. The amount of time it takes to climb Caldera Blanca will also vary depending on whether you decide to talk round the top of the entire crater.

Here is a breakdown of what it took me to do each of the stages (I walk relatively fast).

+ 35 minutes from the car park to the bottom of the crater

+ 10 minutes from the bottom of the crater to the lowest point of the crater top

+ 35 minutes from the lowest point of the crater to the highest point (walking left)

+ 45 minutes from the highest point back to the lowest point in the opposite direction (completing a full circle). Take note that this way is a bit more challenging and a small section does require you to make small climbs.

+ 40 minutes back to the car

+ 30 minutes for rest stops / photos

How long does it take to walk the Caldera Blanca crater?

In summary, it depends on your level of fitness, and how fast you choose to walk it. It took me a total of 3.15 hours including a few short rests and photo opportunities.

Terrain in Caldera Blanca:

Okay, so the terrain changes throughout the walk. From the carpark to the bottom of the crater, you walk across big stones that have been used to carve out a path. After a while my ankles began to ache so if you have supportive shoes, take them with you.

Scaling up the side of the crater is easy, it’s the typical dirt path that you find across the island.

Once you are up the top of the crater, there is a mix of dirt path, and rocks such as these shown below in the photo.

Watch Out For…

Once you arrive at the bottom of the crater, it is pretty hard to spot the path going up the side of the volcano.

You will see a few abandoned rock walls (looks like where they used to keep animals). Standing next to these walls, facing the direction of the crater, walk to your left. There is a slightly visible path that will easily make you question if you are going the right way. You are.

After a few minutes, look out for the path to your right that leads up the side of the crater.

How to get to Caldera Blanca

Head to Google Maps and type in “Volcanic Trail Parking”. If you are not currently in Lanzarote, you may need to add the postcode to help you find it easier: 35560 Tinajo, Las Palmas.

Follow the maps and you’ll arrive at an off-road car park. Park your car, take your belongings and follow the footpath through the lava fields towards the crater.

Be Aware: It is illegal to walk off the outlined paths in the National Park of Lanzarote. This is both a protection to the incredible landscape, but also to yourself. The lava is known for sinking and it can be dangerous if you stand on an area that isn’t as stable as you think.

TIP! Take a jumper with you, the wind at the top is cold! (This may not be necessary in the middle of summer – but I wouldn’t know).

In Summary, here is the most important information you need to know about hiking Caldera Blanca Lanzarote:

Address: Volcanic Trail Parking, 35560 Tinajo, Las Palmas
Opening hours: 24/7
Entrance fee: Free
Hike duration: 3-4 hours depending on fitness level/rest time
Great for: Exercise lovers, hikers, adventurers
Not so great for: People very scared of heights (it’s not that bad I promise!). People who don’t want to do a long walk / have the correct footwear to walk across the rocks (trainers are fine!).
