Today was my first day as a farmer! We woke up at 5.15am as the bus to work left at 6am. There were 10 of us going to the same farm that morning, all very clueless as to what we were in for. We arrived at the farm and were greeted by the farmer. He looked down at our feet and said “oh you wont need your shoes, unless you want to lose them in the mud”.
Naturally, we all looked at each other and began to laugh as we thought he was joking. He wasn’t. The next 3 days were spent knee deep in mud, trekking through the fields as we planted the eggplants and squash. I even began to go to work in my flipflops and being covered in mud became a normal part of my day. The farmers all think it’s pretty funny, as they are used to having newbies in all the time. They laugh at us and tell us to man up – I’m not sure how long I’ll last in this job!
Farm work, although were just starting, is literally the hardest thing I have ever done. 6-7 hours a day bent down so that your hands touch the ground should be illegal. It is the most pain I have ever been in.
We have now started working on a new farm aswell, just Libs and me. So we are working a lot at the minute – learning new things every day. Everything we have been doing is so physically and mentally draining that we come home exhausted. The only things getting us through are the fact that we are practically being paid to work out (and will be Insta ready for our travels) and the idea of a 3 month trip at the end of it.
One of our friends came up from Sydney to join us in the hostel as she also wants to do her farm work. Its really nice having her here as it brings a little bit of our old life in Sydney up here, as cringe as that sounds. Ally also gets here in a few days which I am so excited for. We have been saving a bed for her in our room so that we can all be together once she’s here. I literally cannot wait to see her. It’s been 1 month since we left everyone and were definitely in need of a reunion.
Speaking of reunions, T is here for the week visiting, it’s so good to have him here as we haven’t spent any time together in so long. He is going to try and find a job here and if not he’ll go up to the next town.
We have a pool party coming up this Saturday so that’s should be good fun and it’ll give us time to get know all the newbies that have moved in.
