Visiting Edinburgh in autumn is a magical experience! The city brightens up with the changing colours of the season, and the crisp air adds a sense of coziness to your experience. Here are some reasons to visit, and top activities to enjoy during autumn in Edinburgh:

Why Visit Edinburgh in Autumn:

Autumnal Beauty: Edinburgh’s historic architecture, from its medieval Old Town to its Georgian New Town, is stunning year-round, but in autumn, the city becomes even more picturesque. The parks and gardens are covered with orange, gold, and crimson foliage. Walking around the city feels like stepping into a beautiful painting.

Fewer Crowds: After the busy summer season, Edinburgh is way quieter in autumn. This means you can explore the city’s attractions more comfortably, without battling large crowds. I deliberately choose where I go on my travels based on the number of people I know will be there at any given time. Less people = way more enjoyable!

Cosy Atmosphere: Edinburgh’s cozy cafes and traditional pubs take on a special charm in autumn. It’s the perfect time to enjoy a warm drink or a hearty Scottish meal by a crackling fire after a day of exploring. I absolutely loved going into the pubs for a filling meal and warming up by the fire!

4. Cultural Events: While the summer festivals may be over, autumn brings a range of smaller, yet still exciting, cultural events. These include literature festivals, art exhibitions, theater performances, and Halloween celebrations. You can still find many things to do in the city. This website has up to date information about events that you may find useful.

Visiting Edinburgh in Autumn

Beware: THE WEATHER. One of the biggest charms of visiting Edinburgh in Autumn is experiencing the rainy and gloomy mood of the city. As a photographer, it massively adds to the effect of a good photo! However, if you’re not a photographer and don’t want to take some very cool shots around the city, be prepared for rainy days! Funnily enough, when my friend and I went there, we got mostly blue skies which we didn’t actually want lol! Take a waterproof jacket, boots and an umbrella – you will most likely need them.

Things to Do in Edinburgh in Autumn:

1. Explore the Royal Botanic Garden:

The Royal Botanic Garden is breathtaking in autumn. You can wander around the vibrant autumnal foliage, especially in the Woodland Garden and Arboretum. You can also see the autumn trees such as maples and beeches.

2. Stroll Through Holyrood Park and Arthur’s Seat:

Take a walk up to Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano that offers incredible panoramic views of the city. In autumn, the surrounding Holyrood Park becomes golden, with many falling autumn leaves, making it even more enchanting.

3. Walk the Royal Mile

The Royal Mile is the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, that stretches from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace. In autumn, the cobbled streets and historic buildings take on a dramatic, moody atmosphere. Be sure to stop by a cozy cafe and browse the many shops along the way.

4. Attend the Samhuinn Fire Festival

Celebrate Halloween the Celtic way by attending the Samhuinn Fire Festival, usually held on October 31st. It’s a lively spectacle featuring fire performances, drumming, and costumes, all celebrating the ancient tradition of Samhuinn (the Gaelic precursor to Halloween)

5. Visit Greyfriars Kirkyard

In autumn visiting the Greyfriars Kirkyard graveyard is a must for a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere. There are many colorful leaves scattered among old tombstones and misty air adding to the mystique. It’s famous for a few reasons, including the loyal dog Greyfriars Bobby, eerie ghost stories like the Mackenzie Poltergeist, and historical graves that inspired Harry Potter. This graveyard is perfect for an autumn stroll or ghost tour. The season’s crisp air and early evenings make it an ideal time to explore this iconic Edinburgh site.

Visiting Edinburgh in Autumn

6. Take a Ghost Tour

Edinburgh is known for its spooky past, and in autumn, with its darker evenings, is the perfect time to explore the city’s haunted side. Join a ghost tour that delves into the eerie underground vaults and old cemeteries!

7. Explore Edinburgh’s Festivals

Autumn is full of cultural events like the Edinburgh Art Fair, which showcases contemporary art from Scotland and beyond, and the Scottish International Storytelling Festival, which celebrates the power of storytelling through various performances and workshops.

8. Tour Edinburgh Castle

No visit to Edinburgh is complete without exploring Edinburgh Castle. In autumn, the castle’s rugged appearance is complemented by the changing leaves and misty mornings, creating a mystical ambiance.

Visiting Edinburgh in Autumn

9. Visit the National Museum of Scotland

When the autumn weather gets chilly, you can escape indoors to the National Museum of Scotland. This fascinating museum offers everything from natural history exhibits to Scottish history and culture.

10. Enjoy Scottish Comfort Food

With the cool autumnal air, it’s the perfect time to indulge in classic Scottish comfort food. Try warming dishes like haggis, neeps, and tatties, Cullen skink (a rich Scottish soup), or a hearty steak pie. Pair it with a dram of whisky to truly embrace the season! My favourite are the steak pies that come with chips and gravy!

11. Discover Dean Village

Dean Village is a tranquil, scenic area along the Water of Leith, just a short walk from the city center. In autumn, the village’s leafy surroundings turn golden, making it perfect for a peaceful stroll.

Autumn is also an ideal time to take day trips from Edinburgh. The surrounding countryside, such as the Pentland Hills and the Scottish Highlands, are stunning in autumn and perfect for hiking or scenic drives. Here I have written a post about the best places to visit in Scotland during autumn.

Calton Hill: A shorter and easier walk, offering views of the city’s skyline and landmarks such as the National Monument and Edinburgh Castle.

Visit:

Edinburgh Castle: In autumn, the surrounding landscapes of the castle transform into warm oranges, golds, and reds. The views of Princes Street Gardens, the Old Town, and beyond to the hills and coast are even more stunning during this season, providing a perfect backdrop for photos.

Greyfriars Kirkyard. It is one of the most historic and atmospheric graveyards in Scotland, making it a must-visit, especially during autumn when the falling leaves and misty air add to its eerie charm. It dates back to the 16th century and is the final resting place of many notable figures in Scottish history. One of the most famous legends is that of Greyfriars Bobby, a loyal Skye Terrier who supposedly guarded his owner’s grave for 14 years after his death. A statue of the dog stands near the entrance of the kirkyard.

For fans of Harry Potter, Greyfriars Kirkyard holds special significance. Author J.K. Rowling took inspiration from some of the gravestones for character names in her books. For example, you can find the grave of Thomas Riddell, which many believe influenced the naming of Lord Voldemort (Tom Riddle).

8. Glenfinnan

Glenfinnan is famous for its viaduct, after it featured in the Harry Potter films. In autumn, the surrounding trees glow in shades of gold and red, making this already picturesque location even more breathtaking. The area is also historically significant as the site where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard during the Jacobite Rebellion.

Visit the reindeer in Cairngorms National Park for a unique and magical experience in Scotland. The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd is the only free-ranging reindeer herd in the UK, and they have been part of the landscape since 1952. It was one of my favourite days in Scotland, as we got to get up close and feed the herd! Here’s what you need to know for visiting the reindeer:

Visiting the Reindeer:

Guided Hill Trips: To see the reindeer in the wild, you must join a guided trip. These trips allow you to walk up into the hills with a knowledgeable guide who will lead you to the herd. The hike is relatively easy, but it can be a bit slippy at times.

Duration: The hill trip typically lasts 1.5-2 hours.

Seasonal Access: These trips run year-round. The exact meeting point may vary between the Glenmore base or nearby spots depending on where the herd is grazing at the time.

Cost: There is a fee for the guided tours, but it is generally affordable and goes towards the care of the reindeer.

Clothing: You MUST wear hiking boots. You will not be allowed to go visit the herd wearing standard trainers. This is for your own safety as the land tends to be very wet. Considering the trip takes around 2hours, the staff do not want you to get sick by wearing wet shoes for that long. I also highly recommend wearing waterproof trousers over your clothes, and a jacket. I wore mine and thank goodness I did because it rained HARD.

Visit the Reindeer at Cairngorms National Park

Paddocks at the Centre: If you prefer not to hike, you can visit the reindeer paddocks located at the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre. Here, a small group of reindeer is kept year-round for visitors to see up close. This is a great option for families with young children or those who are unable to join the hill trip.

Paddock Visits: These visits are shorter and allow you to learn about the reindeer while seeing them in a more accessible setting.

Advance Booking: It is highly recommend to book in advance online. This is becoming a popular tour in Scotland and the availability is limited. If you are planning to visit during peak times (holidays and weekends) you absolutely need to book in well in advance!

The Reindeer Herd at Cairngorms National Park:

Location: The herd roams freely across the Cairngorm mountains in the Scottish Highlands. The base of operations for visitors is in Glenmore, where the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre is located.

Free-roaming: While it says that the herd are free-roaming, the Cairngorm reindeer herd is not entirely free to roam wherever they please across the whole of the Cairngorms. The herd’s movement is managed to ensure their well-being and to keep them within a specific range of land. The herders guide them between different grazing areas depending on the season, weather conditions, and food availability. This is to ensure that the reindeer do not overgraze any one area and remain healthy.

The reindeer live in their natural environment and exhibit wild behaviors. They forage for their food, breed naturally, and engage in the seasonal migratory patterns typical of reindeer herds. So, while their movements are monitored and guided by the herders, they do experience a relatively natural and autonomous lifestyle in the wild.

Number of Reindeer: The herd consists of around 150 reindeer, which are well-suited to the cold, subarctic climate of the Cairngorms. The reindeer have been carefully managed, and they live in a semi-wild state, grazing in the mountains.

Reindeer History: Originally introduced by a Swedish reindeer herder named Mikel Utsi, reindeer are native to Scotland but disappeared thousands of years ago. Thanks to conservation efforts, they now thrive in the Cairngorms.

Best Time to Visit the Reindeer at Cairngorms National Park:

Autumn and Winter: Visiting during autumn or winter can be particularly special, as the Cairngorms are often snow-covered, and the reindeer are in their element. You might even see them with full antlers!

Spring and Summer: In warmer months, the landscape is lush and green, and the reindeer are often grazing on the higher slopes.

What to Expect:

Close Encounters: The reindeer are used to human presence and are very approachable. You may get the chance to feed and interact with them during the guided tours.

Spectacular Scenery: The Cairngorms provide a breathtaking backdrop, with expansive views, rugged mountains, and vast skies. Visiting in autumn gives you the bonus of stunning autumnal colours.

Things to Keep in Mind:

Weather Conditions: Weather in the Cairngorms can be unpredictable, so dress warmly and be prepared for potentially cold and wet conditions, especially in autumn and winter.

Fitness Level: While the hill walk is not strenuous, a reasonable level of fitness is required as it involves walking on uneven terrain.

Practical Information:

Getting There: The Reindeer Centre is located near Glenmore, about 20 minutes’ drive from Aviemore. Public transport is available, but driving offers more flexibility.

Accessibility: The paddock visits are accessible to all, but the hill trips require the ability to walk on uneven and sometimes steep ground.

You can find more detailed information and book your visit through the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre website.

Visiting the reindeer is an unforgettable experience that combines the beauty of the Cairngorms with the rare chance to see these magnificent animals in their natural habitat.

Other Activities Nearby:

Aviemore: The town of Aviemore is a popular base for visitors to the Cairngorms, offering a range of accommodation, dining, and outdoor activities like skiing, hiking, and wildlife tours.

Loch Morlich: A beautiful nearby loch where you can enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply take in the scenery.

Cairngorm Mountain Funicular: Ride up Cairn Gorm Mountain for incredible views and access to more hiking routes.

Visiting The Hermitage in Scotland during the autumn period is a magical experience. It blends beautiful landscapes with a deep sense of history.

The Hermitage is a picturesque woodland located near Dunkeld, Perthshire, in central Scotland. It is known for its beautiful forests, dramatic waterfalls, and historical follies. This makes it an excellent spot for nature lovers and anyone seeking tranquility.

Why Visit The Hermitage in Autumn:

Autumn is one of the best times to visit The Hermitage. The woodlands become a vibrant tapestry of colours—golden yellows, rich oranges, and deep reds. The contrast of these autumnal hues against the rushing waterfalls and serene River Braan creates a stunning spectacle. As a photographer, I was in complete awe.

Key Highlights:

Ossian’s Hall and Ossian’s Cave

The Hermitage is home to Ossian’s Hall of Mirrors, an 18th-century folly that overlooks the dramatic Black Linn Falls. This is a great viewpoint to take in the mesmerizing falls below. Nearby, Ossian’s Cave adds a mythical touch to the landscape, named after the legendary Gaelic poet Ossian.

Black Linn Falls

The waterfall is one of the central features of The Hermitage. In autumn, with increased rainfall, the falls become even more powerful, making it a breathtaking sight. The rich colors of the season add to the ambiance of this natural wonder.

Woodland Walks

The Hermitage offers several walking trails that are perfect for autumn strolls. You’ll walk among towering Douglas firs (some of the tallest trees in the UK) and across rustic bridges, taking in the autumnal colors and the sound of rushing water.

Wildlife

Autumn brings opportunities to spot Scottish wildlife. You might catch glimpses of red squirrels, deer, and a variety of birds. The peace and quiet of the season make it a great time to observe nature.

Photography

The autumn light and vibrant foliage make The Hermitage a paradise for photographers. Whether you’re capturing landscapes, waterfalls, or wildlife, the scenery is breathtaking.

I personally stayed here and could not recommend it ENOUGH! The entire property is absolutely breathtaking. As you drive through the majestic brick gates, you’ll pass countrysides filled with roaming deer, adjacent to a fast-flowing river Tay. The hotel is an old manor house, converted into a luxury 4-star hotel. It has an incredible charm. The dinning options are delicious, I ate there every night! There is also a spa and massage treatments available – which I also took advantage of! Everything was incredible and I would go back in a heartbeat.

The location is perfect, only a few minutes drive from the Hermitage. There is free parking onsite too.
