If you want to see the Jacobite steam train A.K.A. The Hogwarts Express, you can do so in Scotland.

It is a popular tourist attraction that operates on the West Highland Line, crossing the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct. Please note that schedules and prices may change, so it’s crucial to check the latest information directly from official sources or the operator before planning your trip.

If you wish to see the Jacobite train, there are 2 different ways to do it. You can either visit the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct and see the train from the outside passing over the bridge, or you can go to the departure station in Fort William.

You can even buy a ticket and ride the steam train and can find the prices here.

Visiting the Glennfinan Viaduct

The Jacobite steam train passes over the Glenfinnan Viaduct twice daily. Once in the morning, departing from Fort William, and once again upon it’s return from Mallaig.

The best time to see the train is in the morning due to a number of reasons:

  1. The train is forward facing
  2. There is a slight incline in this direction meaning the steam train needs to pump out extra steam to make it across. This is great for photos and videos

What time should you arrive to Glenfinnan Viaduct to see the Jacobite Steam Train?

The jacobite steam train A.K.A Hogwarts Express departs from Fort William station at 10:15 AM. It passes over the Glenfinnan Viaduct at 10:45 AM. I highly recommend arriving to the car park at 10AM latest as it gets very busy and there are a limited amount of spaces.

Once you have parked your car, you will walk through the car park and under the viaduct to climb up the hill at the other side. I recommend going to the left side so that you can see the train coming in your direction. You will not be alone as many families and photographers gather here to watch the train.

Grab your spot and wait for the train to come by!

If you visit the Glenfinnan Viaduct in the afternoon…

The Jacobite train passes over the viaduct in the afteroon at 15:30. I recommend arriving an hour before as it tends to be even busier in the afternoons.

At this time, the train is backwards facing, meaning the front of the train is at the back and the carriages are at the front. If you wish to get photos of the front (engine), I recommend going to the same spot as the morning (under the viaduct and left). In the photos you won’t be able to tell that it’s going backwards and you could reverse any videos you take lol!

If you want to see the train coming towards you, you can go under the viaduct and up the hill on the right hand side.
