If you’re planning on hiking the Path of the Gods Amalfi Coast, you’re in for one of the most spectacular experiences in Italy. Famous for its dramatic cliffside scenery, panoramic Mediterranean views and picturesque villages, the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) is considered one of the most beautiful coastal hikes in Europe. After completing it myself, I can completely understand why.

The Path of the Gods stretches between the mountain village of Bomerano and Nocelle, high above Positano. Throughout almost the entire hike, you’re treated to breathtaking views of the Amalfi Coast, colourful villages perched on the cliffs, and the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea below.

Unlike many famous hikes, the scenery changes constantly. One moment you’re walking through shaded woodland, the next you’re standing on rocky cliff edges looking out over the coastline. It’s easy to see why this trail has become one of the most popular things to do on the Amalfi Coast.

Hike Logistics:

The most popular route begins in Bomerano and finishes in Nocelle.

• Distance: Approximately 7 km one way
• Hiking time: 2–3 hours
• Difficulty: Moderate

Although it’s not an especially technical hike, don’t underestimate it. The trail is rocky, uneven and includes plenty of steps, so I recommend wearing proper hiking shoes or supportive trainers rather than sandals. 

Most visitors hike from Bomerano to Nocelle, which is the easiest and most popular direction. The trail gently descends overall, allowing you to enjoy the spectacular scenery without as much climbing. Walking in the opposite direction is absolutely possible, but you’ll be tackling considerably more uphill sections.

The Best Time for Hiking the Path of the Gods Amalfi Coast

One thing that surprised me was how much your start time affects the experience. Many guides recommend starting early to avoid the crowds and the heat. While this is true, there’s one downside, morning fog.

When we arrived early, much of the coastline was hidden beneath low cloud. Although it eventually cleared, we spent time (2-3 HOURS playing cards and eating) waiting in a café before starting the hike so we could actually enjoy the famous views.

If you start later in the morning, you’re more likely to get clear skies, but you’ll also be sharing the trail with far more people. Unfortunately, there isn’t a perfect time to hike. It’s a trade-off between fewer crowds and better visibility.

If you’re visiting during summer, I’d personally recommend arriving early but keeping an eye on the weather. If it’s foggy, grab a coffee in Bomerano and wait for it to lift before setting off.

How to Get to the Start of Hiking the Path of the Gods Amalfi Coast

The hike officially starts in Bomerano, and there are several ways to reach it. Many visitors stay in Positano, Amalfi or Sorrento and catch local buses. 

One very important tip: buy your bus ticket before boarding. Tickets cannot be purchased on the bus! You can buy them at most convenient stores.

If you’re planning to leave Positano by ferry afterwards, book your ferry ticket in advance too, particularly during summer when services often sell out.

My Recommended Route (this is what we did)

Instead of staying in Positano, we chose to stay in Castellammare di Stabia. Accommodation is much cheaper, and there’s a direct one-hour bus to Bomerano. Here’s the itinerary we followed:

• Catch the 7:00 am bus to Bomerano.
• If there’s morning fog, enjoy breakfast or coffee while waiting for it to clear.
• Complete the hike to Nocelle.
• Walk (or take the local bus) down to Positano.
• Explore Positano for the afternoon.
• Catch the ferry back to Castellammare di Stabia.

The ferry ride gives you beautiful views back towards Positano and the Amalfi Coast, so it almost feels like an extra sightseeing cruise included in your day. If I were hiking the Path of the Gods Amalfi Coast again, I’d choose this exact itinerary.

Positano was beautiful, but we were so glad to leave the masses of tourists and majorly overpriced restaurants and cafes. We visited in May too, so I can’t even imagine it during the summer months.

What to Bring When Hiking the Path of the Gods Amalfi Coast

Although the hike isn’t especially long, there are very few facilities along the trail. There’s only one water fountain and one small bar along the route, so don’t rely on buying supplies once you’ve started.

I recommend bringing:

• Plenty of water
• Snacks or a packed lunch
• Sunscreen
• Sunglasses
• A hat
• Comfortable hiking shoes
• Layers (as with any hike in the mountains, you should always have multiple layers with you. In the morning we were really cold until the fog cleared and then we were boiling)

The trail is exposed for much of the walk, so you’ll appreciate having enough water, especially during summer.

The hike finishes in the village of Nocelle, perched high above Positano. From here, you have two options.

– Walk the Famous Steps to Positano

Many people continue down the famous staircase into Positano. Be warned though, there are around 1,700 steps. I decided to run down them (less pressure on the legs and joints), and honestly… I could barely walk properly for the next three days lol. They were intense!!

– Take the Local Bus

If your legs have already had enough after the hike, you can catch the local bus into Positano instead. 

Either way, once you arrive, expect crowds. Positano is one of the most visited towns on the Amalfi Coast, and during summer it becomes incredibly busy.

What to Expect in Positano

Positano is every bit as beautiful as the photos suggest. It’s also incredibly busy.

During peak season expect crowded streets, queues for restaurants and packed beaches. I’d recommend spending a few hours exploring before catching the ferry out.

Parking Information

If you’re driving to the hike, parking in Bomerano is limited. Public parking spaces fill quickly during summer mornings, so arrive early if you want the best chance of finding a space. If possible, using public transport is often less stressful than driving along the narrow Amalfi Coast roads. It is also way more afordable. 

Remember that if you take a car, you will also need to find a way to get back to the beginning. Although it is possible to walk back, the path is not very wide and in the summer, with the masses of people, you’d be fighting the whole way against “oncoming traffic” of hikers.

Is Hiking the Path of the Gods Amalfi Coast Worth It?

Absolutely.

Even with the crowds, changing weather and transport planning, this remains one of my favourite hikes in Italy.

The combination of dramatic cliffs, panoramic sea views and charming villages makes it unlike anywhere else I’ve hiked.

With a little preparation: booking transport in advance, packing enough water and choosing your start time carefully, you’ll have an unforgettable day exploring one of Italy’s most iconic walking trails.

If you’re visiting southern Italy, I genuinely think hiking the Path of the Gods Amalfi Coast deserves a place at the very top of your itinerary.

The most popular route within the Zingaro Nature Reserve is from Scopello to San Vito Lo Capo, although many visitors choose to complete the trail as an out and back hike from either entrance.

• Distance: Approximately 7 km one way
• Hiking time: Around 2 hours each way
• Difficulty: Moderate (the path is easy to follow, but there’s no shade and lots of up and down).
• Trail type: Point to point or out and back
• Terrain: Well maintained rocky coastal trail with some gradual climbs

Although the hike itself can be completed in around two hours each way, most people spend much longer exploring the beaches and swimming in the incredibly clear water. It is easy to turn this into a full day adventure. Due to the lack of shade, and the hot Sicilian sun, multiple dips in the ocean are very welcome!

What to Expect When Hiking in Zingaro National Park in Sicily

One of the reasons this hike is so popular is because the scenery constantly changes. The trail hugs the coastline for almost its entire length, offering uninterrupted views across the Mediterranean Sea.

You can expect:

• Dramatic limestone cliffs

• Native Mediterranean plants and flowers
• Beautiful viewpoints overlooking the coastline

The Best Beaches in Zingaro Nature Reserve

One of the highlights of hiking in the Zingaro Nature Reserve is discovering the secluded beaches scattered along the coastline. Many of these hidden coves are only accessible on foot, making them far quieter than Sicily’s more famous beaches.

Pack your swimsuit because you will almost certainly want to stop for a swim. The water here is some of the clearest you will find anywhere in Sicily, with vibrant shades of turquoise and deep blue that almost look tropical.

Entrance Fee and Opening Hours to Zingaro National Reserve

Before planning your visit, it is worth knowing a few practical details.

Entrance fee: €5 per person

Opening hours: Generally open daily from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm. 

Opening hours and trail access can change, particularly during summer when sections of the reserve may close due to wildfire risk. Always check the latest information before visiting.

Parking: The main car park at the entrance is “free” (technically it’s included in your entrance ticket). However, it fills up FAST. The surrounding car parks all cost €10 for the day which is crazy considering it’s 50 metres away (but there’s no other parking options). You also need to pay the parking in CASH.

Bring Plenty of Water

There are very limited facilities inside the nature reserve, so carry more water than you think you will need, especially during the warmer months.

Wear Proper Hiking Shoes (or good trainers)

Although the trail is well maintained, much of it is rocky and uneven. Comfortable walking or hiking shoes with good grip are highly recommended.

Pack Snacks

There are no restaurants or cafés along the hiking trail, so bring enough food for the day if you plan on completing the full route. We brought some sandwiches, fruit, biscuits and lots of water.

Don’t Forget Sun Protection

Much of the trail is exposed with very little shade. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are essential, particularly during summer. The Sicilian sun is no joke!

Bring Your Swimsuit

One of the biggest highlights of the hike is swimming in the secluded coves. Many visitors spend just as much time relaxing by the water as they do walking. Just remember, that every time you choose to walk down to get into the ocean, you’ll have to hike back up again, so choose your stops wisely. 

When is the Best Time for Hiking in Zingaro National Park in Sicily?

Spring and autumn are generally considered the best seasons to visit. Temperatures are pleasant, the landscapes are green and the hiking conditions are much more comfortable.

Summer offers beautiful weather and perfect swimming conditions, but temperatures can become extremely hot. If visiting during July or August, it is best to start early in the morning and always check whether the reserve is open, as temporary closures can occur during periods of high fire risk.

How to Get to Zingaro Nature Reserve

The reserve has two main entrances:

• South entrance near Scopello
• North entrance near San Vito Lo Capo

Many visitors begin at Scopello before hiking towards San Vito Lo Capo, although either direction offers equally stunning scenery. If you are only planning a shorter walk, you can simply hike to one of the nearby beaches before returning to your starting point.

P.S. The trail is so dusty! Be prepared to come off it covered in orange dust We both had closed shoes on and still managed to get orange feet too. Our socks and trainers were also stained. Timo had also just washed his white trainers the day before haha. Had we known, he obviously wouldn’t have!

But after spending two weeks exploring the island using trains, local buses, FlixBus, and only hiring a car for two days, I can honestly say that a Sicily road trip without a car is completely possible. I would also go as far to say THE BEST way to explore the island.

From colourful coastal towns and crystal-clear beaches to mountain villages, historic cities, and incredible hiking trails, Sicily quickly became one of my favourite places in Europe. The food is amazing, the landscapes constantly change, and every stop feels completely different from the last.

How to Travel Around Sicily Without a Car

A few of the reasons we decided to do a 2 week road trip in Sicily without a car include:

– Crazy Italian traffic (and driving )
– Paid parking EVERYWHERE. Most of the signs we saw were €1 for 30 minutes. That adds up fast!
– Lack of parking. I read so many reviews of people not being able to park anywhere near their accommodation
– Narrow streets

One of the biggest surprises during our 2 week road trip in Sicily was how easy it was to travel between major destinations without driving. Here are a few reliable options:

Trains in Sicily

The train network connects many of Sicily’s most popular destinations including:

• Catania
• Taormina-Giardini Station
• Cefalù
• Palermo

Trains are affordable, comfortable, and usually offer beautiful coastal views throughout the journey. Every train we took was modern, smooth and reliable. We didn’t experience any delays and it was by far the most comfortable way to travel Sicily. You can buy a ticket at every station, just remember to validate it by placing it in the machine before boarding the train.

FlixBus

For longer journeys or routes where trains aren’t ideal, FlixBus was incredibly useful. We found buses between certain destinations often faster than trains and often cheaper when booked in advance.

Local Buses

Local buses connect smaller towns, beaches, and villages that aren’t accessible by train.

They’re particularly useful around:

• Taormina
• Giardini Naxos
• Trapani
• Erice

Hiring a Car

For most of this 2 week road trip in Sicily, we didn’t need a car at all. The only time we hired one was for two days to explore the western coastline and visit Riserva Naturale Orientata dello Zingaro.

There are public buses available, but we wanted more flexibility to explore viewpoints, beaches, and smaller coastal areas at our own pace.

If we were to hire a car for a longer period, we would have used Discover cars. They offer full insurance and are always so much cheaper than other companies. For us, hiring cars with this company has always worked out well, but do your research and choose what you feel most comfortable with.

Major International Airports in Sicily

I recommend starting your 2 week road trip in Sicily in either Catania or Palermo, and ending at the other. Many people book flights without thinking about the extra driving time you’ll need to do between the two major cities. If it works out well for you with timing and pricing, you can do what we did, and fly into one and leave from the other. Sicily is an island, but a rather large one! Both Catania and Palermo have international airports with many flight routes available.

2 nights is usually enough before continuing your 2 week road trip in Sicily.

Taormina & Giardini Naxos

Taormina is easily one of the most beautiful towns on the island. Perched high above the sea, Taormina offers incredible views of Mount Etna, dramatic cliffs, and the sparkling coastline below. 

Because accommodation can be expensive in Taormina itself, we stayed in nearby Giardini Naxos and travelled between the two. There is a public bus, or you can hike up the path (approx 45 mins uphill).

The train from Catania or Palermo stops at Gardinia Naxos which is around a 15 minute walk into Naxos town. If you stay in Taormina, you will need to hike up the hill with your luggage, wait for the public bus that stops at the train station, or pay for a taxi. Taxi rides are approx 20-30€ for the 10-15 minute drive which is a bit steep.

Teatro Antico di Taormina

The ancient Greek theatre is one of Sicily’s most famous landmarks. The views alone are worth visiting. I loved this theatre but I will say it’s overpriced for what it is. Price: €16

Isola Bella

A tiny island connected to the mainland by a narrow stretch of sand. The water here is some of the clearest you’ll find during your 2 week road trip in Sicily. We walked down to Isola Bella from Taormina and it took around 30 minutes. We then took a public bus (comes every 1 hour) from here back to Gardinia Naxos.

Wander the Historic Centre

Half the experience is simply walking through the narrow streets, discovering viewpoints, cafés, and hidden corners. There are many restaurants, cafes and food stalls to experience too.

Staying in Giardini Naxos

Giardini Naxos is a great alternative to Taormina.

You’ll find:

• Cheaper accommodation
• Beachfront restaurants
• Easier access to the sea
• Good bus connections

Buses run frequently between Giardini Naxos and Taormina throughout the day.

How Long to Stay

3 nights gives you enough time to enjoy both locations without rushing.

Places to visit in Sicily: Cefalù

Cefalù was one of my favourite stops during this 2 week road trip in Sicily. It somehow manages to feel lively and relaxed at the same time. The old town sits right beside the sea, with colourful buildings, narrow streets, and a beautiful sandy beach. There is also a castle on top of the hill, which overlooks the whole city below. 

Going from Catania to Palermo, we decided to stop in Cefalu, primarly to break up the journey. It turned out to be so much more than that.

From Catania, you buy a train ticket to Cefalú (1 change in Messina Centrale – total 3-4 hours).

Things to Do in Cefalù

Climb La Rocca

The hike up La Rocca offers some of the best views in Sicily. It’s steep but absolutely worth it. The entrance costs 5e per adult and is open from 08:00-20:00. Last entrance in is at 18:00. You cannot wear open shoes.

Visit Cefalù Cathedral

The cathedral dominates the town centre and is one of Sicily’s most impressive Norman buildings. 

Relax on the Beach

Unlike many Sicilian towns, Cefalù has a large sandy beach right next to the historic centre. It’s perfect for slow afternoons.

How Long to Stay in Cefalu 

We stayed just 1 night to break up the journey. However, we would have happily stayed 2 nights. The only thing I will say is that the accommodation options here weren’t the greatest.

Best places to visit in Sicily: Palermo

No 2 week road trip in Sicily would be complete without Palermo.

It’s chaotic, beautiful, historic, and completely unique. Palermo feels very different from the rest of Sicily. You’ll find grand architecture sitting next to busy markets, hidden churches, and some of the best food on the island.

A sensory overload of local food, fresh produce, and Sicilian culture.

Visit the Capuchin Catacombs

One of the most unusual and unforgettable experiences during our 2 week road trip in Sicily was visiting the Capuchin Catacombs. Hidden beneath a monastery in Palermo, the catacombs contain thousands of preserved bodies dating back hundreds of years. Walking through the underground corridors, you’ll see monks, nobles, professionals, and even children still remarkably intact, many dressed in their original clothing.

It’s certainly not for everyone, but if you’re interested in history and want to experience something completely different from Sicily’s beaches and beautiful piazzas, it’s well worth a visit. Price: 5€

How Long to Stay

Trapani

Trapani has a beautiful old town, stunning sunsets, and easy access to nearby islands. The main reason people visit Trapani is to explore the nearby town of Erice, and visit the Isole islands.

Things to Do in Trapani

• Walk along the waterfront
• Explore the historic centre
• Watch sunset from the city walls
• Use it as a base for Erice and Favignana (the biggest of the Isole islands)

How Long to Stay

2-3 nights.

We took a public bus from Palermo to Trapani. The price cost 10€ per person and was a total of 1.45 hours. It was super easy to get there.

Erice

Erice sits high on a mountain overlooking Trapani and the coastline below. The medieval streets feel frozen in time (and in temperature lol!). I definitely recommend wearing layers. During the day in Trapani it was 25 degrees, yet when we went to Erice we were genuinely freezing. The wind blowing through the streets felt artic.

It did unfortunatelt affect our time there as we couldn’t really concentrate on anything else. However, if you dress more appopriately than what we did, you’ll see stone buildings, tiny alleyways, and incredible viewpoints.

You can reach Erice via:

• Cable car from Trapani (15€ per person return – 10 minutes each way)
• Local bus (approx 45 minutes from Trapani)
• Car (up windy mountain roads).

The cable car is by far the most scenic, and fastest option.

Visiting Favignana Island in Sicily

If you’re looking for crystal-clear water during your 2 week road trip in Sicily, Favignana should be at the top of your list. The island is part of the Egadi Islands and can be reached by ferry from Trapani. The ferry only takes 30 minutes and should be booked online in advance. This ferry completely sells out in summer so make sure to book!

Many visitors rent bicycles to explore the island and I highly recommend that you do. They have normal bikes (5€ per day) and electric bikes (10€) available. This was a great way to explore Favignana and one of my favourite days on the whole trip.

The water here honestly looks like something from the Caribbean. You can easily visit as a day trip from Trapani.

Riserva Naturale Orientata dello Zingaro

This was one of the absolute highlights of our 2 week road trip in Sicily. The reserve stretches along Sicily’s northwest coast between Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo. Think dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, turquoise water, and some of the most beautiful hiking trails in Sicily.

The Hike

The main trail follows the coastline and connects multiple beaches and viewpoints. The further you walk, the quieter it becomes. 

You can start the hike at the south end (Scopello) or at the north end (San Vito lo Capo). 

Getting There

There are public buses available from nearby towns. However, this was the only part of our 2 week road trip in Sicily where we hired a car.

We took a direct bus from Trapani to Palermo Airport (1.10 hours) to pick up a hire car. We rented one for two days because it gave us more flexibility to explore the area and stop at viewpoints along the coast.

For us, it was completely worth it.

Hiking Riserva Naturale Orientata dello Zingaro

Allow at least half a day to fully enjoy it, preferably one full day. The entrance fee is €5 per adult, and parking is free if you are lucky enough to park in the main parking. This will be full by early morning, and the second, overflow parking next door costs €10 per car.

The main coastal trail stretches for approximately 7km one way (14km return) and is considered moderate difficulty due to the rocky terrain, elevation changes, and lack of shade, so bring plenty of water and good walking shoes. Along the route you’ll pass around seven stunning coves with crystal-clear turquoise water, making it almost impossible to resist stopping for a swim every few kilometres.

Places to visit in Sicily that We Didn’t Visit (But Would Add Next Time)

The main reason we didn’t get to these places was because we didn’t hire a car in Sicily. There are public buses available from Catania so it is definitely be possible. We however chose to go north to Cefalu on our way to Palermo. If Noto and Ragusa are high on your list, you would take the south coast route around the island. 

Sicily is so much bigger than it seems, and visiting these two towns would have easily added an extra 2 days of travelling for us which we didn’t have.

Noto

Often called Sicily’s Baroque masterpiece, Noto is famous for its honey-coloured buildings and beautiful architecture. Many people consider it one of the prettiest towns in Sicily.

Ragusa

Ragusa is split into two parts, with the historic district of Ragusa Ibla being the highlight. Its winding streets, churches, and hilltop views make it a favourite among photographers and architecture lovers.

Our route looked like this: Marrakech → Ouzoud Waterfalls → Atlas Mountains → Ait Ben Haddou → Tamraght → Taghazout → Essaouira → Marrakech.

Driving a car in Morocco

Hiring a car in Morocco gives you the freedom to explore the country properly. You can stop at hidden viewpoints, local cafés, drive through the Atlas mountains and even drive between different surf spots. You just need to be prepared for winding mountain roads, changing landscapes, and plenty of police speed checks.

Police checks

We hired our car with Discover Cars. They only work with one company in Morocco called Location Auto. I can’t tell you why their cars are 5x cheaper than all other cars in Morocco. There are quite a lot of negative reviews on Google, but for us, everything worked out fine. We did have to pay an extra 150e because we used a debit card, but even then it was still way cheaper than all other companies. The thing that made us feel confident booking with Location Auto (via Discover Cars) was the fact that we paid extra for the full insurance. Discover cars were then responsible for repayments within 10 days (we didn’t need this). For us, hiring a car in Morocco worked out well with this company, but do your research and choose what you feel comfortable with.

The Ultimate Morocco Road Trip – Best places to visit in Morocco

No ultimate Morocco road trip is complete without spending time in Marrakech, one of the most iconic cities in North Africa. The streets are vibrant, intense, and full of life. The medina is a maze of winding alleyways, hidden riads, rooftop cafés, souks, spices, scooters, and endless photo opportunities. Getting lost here is guaranteed, but it’s part of the experience.

Things to do in Marrakech:

Jemaa el-Fnaa is the beating heart of Marrakech and one of the city’s most famous squares. During the day, it’s filled with market stalls and fresh juice stands, while at night it transforms into a buzzing food market with musicians, smoke rising from food stalls, and complete sensory overload. It’s chaotic, but it’s a huge part of the Marrakech experience.

The Koutoubia Mosque is the largest mosque in Marrakech and dates back to the 12th century. Its 77-metre minaret can be seen from almost anywhere in the city and is one of Morocco’s most recognisable landmarks. Located right next to Jemaa el-Fnaa, it’s an easy stop while exploring the medina. Non-Muslims can’t enter the mosque itself, but the surrounding gardens are peaceful and worth visiting.

Bahia Palace is another must-visit, especially if you love architecture. It’s known for its intricate tiles, peaceful courtyards, carved ceilings, and beautiful traditional Moroccan design. It’s one of the most photographed spots in Marrakech, so visiting early is best to avoid the crowds.

One of the most underrated places in Marrakech is El Badi Palace. Built in the 16th century, it was once one of Morocco’s grandest palaces. Today, it stands beautifully stripped back to ruins, with sunken gardens, giant courtyards, stork nests, and incredible rooftop views over the city. It costs around 100 MAD to enter, and it’s best visited early morning or late afternoon as there’s very little shade. Climbing the walls gives you some of the best views in the city, and it’s usually much quieter than Bahia Palace.

Le Jardin Secret is another hidden gem inside the medina and offers a peaceful escape from the city noise. If you love photography and historic architecture, Ben Youssef Madrasa is also worth visiting for its stunning Islamic design and detailed tilework. One of the best things to do in Marrakech, though, is simply slowing down on a rooftop terrace at sunset. Sitting with mint tea, tagine, and the sound of the call to prayer in the background is one of those travel moments you never forget.

Ouzoud Waterfall

If you’re looking for nature during the ultimate Morocco road trip, Ouzoud Waterfalls should be high on your list. These waterfalls drop around 110 metres in multiple tiers and are surrounded by red rock cliffs, olive groves, and wild monkeys. The name “Ouzoud” actually means “olive” in Berber, which makes perfect sense once you arrive.

Ouzoud Waterfalls are around 3 to 3.5 hours from Marrakech, making them a very popular day trip. Because of that, they get extremely busy. We decided to stay overnight nearby in Palais d’Ouzoud and visited around 5pm when most of the tour buses had already left, and honestly, this made the whole experience so much better. I’d highly recommend doing the same.

If you decide to walk the falls, take the loop route instead of the standard stairs. When you arrive at the main restaurant square, go right instead of left. This takes you to the top of the waterfall first, across a bridge, and then down through the trees before returning via the main staircase. It’s a much better experience. You’ll likely see wild monkeys during the walk, so don’t feed them and keep your belongings close. The small boats also take you right to the base of the falls if you want a different perspective.

Normally I avoid eating at major tourist attractions, but Chez Mounir was genuinely excellent. The food was delicious, the staff were amazing, and the prices were insanely good.

Atlas Mountains

The drive through the Atlas Mountains is one of the highlights of the ultimate Morocco road trip. One moment you’re surrounded by dusty desert roads, and the next you’re driving through mountain curves, green valleys, waterfalls, snow-capped peaks, palm trees, and ancient villages built into the landscape. Every few kilometres feels like a completely different country, and it genuinely surprised me how diverse Morocco is.

Ait Ben Haddou

Ait Ben Haddou feels like stepping into another world. This ancient fortified village looks like a movie set, but people really lived here for centuries. It once sat on an important trade route between the Sahara and Marrakech and is now partly preserved and partly lived in, with local shops inside old clay homes and incredible viewpoints across the valley.

It’s around 3.5 hours from Marrakech, and the drive through the Atlas Mountains alone makes it worth visiting. Go early in the morning before 10am or after 6pm to avoid the heat and crowds. Wear proper shoes because it’s steep, sandy, and uneven. The village itself is free to enter (go round the back) and some homes within the village charge a small fee to enter.

Climbing the hill opposite Ait Ben Haddou gives you the best panoramic view of the entire village (photo below). It was easily one of the most unique stops on our ultimate Morocco road trip.

Moroccan Coast: Tamraght & Taghazout 

After all the inland adventure, heading to the coast feels like a complete reset. Tamraght and Taghazout are small surf towns near Agadir known for their relaxed atmosphere, beach cafés, yoga spots, and slower pace of life. I saw slower, but really, it’s getting more and more popular each year.

Surfing is the most prominent activitiy on the Moroccan coastline. There are surf shops and surf schools all along the coastal towns. Taghazout is the original hub, with a lot more people, but in walking distance from surf spots. Tamraght is known as the ‘overflow’ town, where people go when they can’t find accommodation in Taghazout. Tamraght has now become a popular destination on its own though, with a lot of new restaurants and housing, it’s a lot more modern and laid back. It’s also great for beginners.

The only downside is the 1km walk to the beach from the town, especially if you’re carrying a board. I imagine most surf schools will drive you to the seafront?

If the waves aren’t great, people head up to Taghazout Skatepark. Even if you don’t skate, the ocean views are beautiful and it’s one of the best sunset spots on the coast. Paradise Valley is also a popular day trip, with natural pools surrounded by palm trees and rocky cliffs, best visited early before the crowds arrive,and even better if you can go during the week!

Essaouira

Essaouira, one of the most charming coastal cities in Morocco. It has a completely different energy to Marrakech. Its blue-and-white streets, sea breeze, fresh seafood, artists, old city walls, and a slower rhythm of life. It’s one of those places people plan to stay for two days and accidentally stay for five.

Walking the medina in Essaouira is one of the best things to do because it’s much calmer than Marrakech, making it easier to actually enjoy wandering and shopping without the pressure. Eating fresh seafood at the port is another must. You can choose your fish fresh and have it grilled nearby, creating one of the simplest but best meals of the trip.

One of my favourite parts of visiting Essaouira, was walking through the fishing port. You can witness the locals bringing in their catch of the day, cheering, singing together, and then selling their produce on the market. A cool aspect is that you, as a tourist, can buy a fish, and take it to a guy who sits near the walls with a barbeque and pay him a small fee to cook your fresh fish for you!

The harbour itself, with its blue fishing boats, seagulls, and old harbour walls and canons, are one of the most photogenic parts of the city. And of course, long beach walks, surfing, horse riding, or simply slowing down by the sea make Essaouira the perfect final stop on the ultimate Morocco road trip.

If you’re planning a 2-week Morocco itinerary, this route is one of the best ways to experience a great mix within the country. You get the chaos of Marrakech, the beauty of Ouzoud Waterfalls, the drama of the Atlas Mountains, the history of Ait Ben Haddou, the surf vibes of Taghazout, and the charm of Essaouira, all in one unforgettable journey.

Morocco is a huge country, and to drive across it would take days. We planned to go to a desert, but it’s a 10 hour drive from Marrakech so we skipped it and are grateful that we did.

Morocco constantly changes around every corner, and that’s exactly what makes it so special. The ultimate Morocco road trip is full of surprises, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll leave already planning your return.

How long to spend in each location on your Ultimate Morocco Road Trip…

Marrakech: 2-3 nights/days
Ouzoud waterfall: 1 night/1 day
Atlas mountains: You could opt to stay in a traditional Berber accommodation to break up the drive. We didn’t do this but I would recommend doing it. 
Ait Ben Haddou: 1 night/1 day. We stayed the night and I am so glad we did! We got to visit Ait Ben Haddou after 6pm when the tourists had left and we witnessed the sun setting. We also woke up early to visit it again in the morning before the buses arrived. This was an amazing experience.
Taghazout: 4-5 nights. This depends on you, but we chose to stay here for this many nights to surf. We also did a day trip to Essaouira (2.45h drive each way). You could split these nights between the two locations.

Ahangama

Top Spots to Visit:

• Ahangama Beach – Less crowded than Weligama, perfect for walks and sunsets. Free to visit.

• Kabalana Beach – Popular with surfers, waves for intermediate levels. Surfboard rentals available on-site.

• Handunugoda Tea Estate – Small family-run tea plantation nearby, free entry for a short tour.

What to expect: Quiet beaches (because there are many in the area to choose from), local fishing culture, boutique cafes, and laid back energy.
Why go: Ideal for slow mornings, sunset walks, yoga, surfing, cafes and escaping (big) crowds. It’s still busy, but not as busy as Weligama.
Getting there: Around 2.5 hours from Colombo by car or train to Ahangama station followed by a short tuk tuk ride.

TIP! Visit nearby Midigama for beautiful beaches, delicious restaurants and a MUCH quieter stay.

Midigama

Midigama is known for its stunning beaches and surf breaks, but it still keeps a peaceful, uncrowded feel. There are a lot less people staying here, which makes it feel more like a hidden gem. The beaches here are also much more beautiful than the beach at Weligama.

What to expect: Clear blue water, quiet beaches, and a slower pace of life. You also tend to see turtles swimming in the bay here.
Why go: Great for beach days, surf watching, and escaping busy tourist hubs.
Getting there: Located between Ahangama and Weligama, easily reached by train or tuk tuk.

Weligama

Weligama is one of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka for beginner surfers and café lovers. The wide bay creates gentle waves perfect for learning.

What to expect: Many surf schools, beachfront cafes, relaxed coastal life, and a welcoming atmosphere.
Why go: Perfect place to learn surfing while enjoying great coffee and ocean views.
Getting there: Just 10 minutes from Mirissa by tuk tuk or train.

It is a really crowded beach break full of surfers, but because the bay is long, there are many sections where you can jump in the water and still feel comfortable enough to learn.

Mirissa

Mirissa is famous for whale watching, dreamy sunsets, and the iconic Coconut Tree Hill viewpoint. It has a lively but still relaxed beach vibe. HOWEVER, I personally would not stay here. It’s crowded with tourists who tend to stay in all inclusives and drink cocktails all day (nothing wrong with it, it’s just not my vibe!). 

I would stop here for an hour or two to see the palm trees (also, very honestly, it looks better on Instagram) plus the beach is beautiful and good for swimming as there aren’t any waves. If you fancy going out to see the whales which are often visible in this area, you can book onto a whale watching tour.

You can also opt for this one that’s a bit more expensive but has better ratings.

What to expect: Whale watching tours, beach restaurants, golden sand, and sunset viewpoints.
Why go: One of the few places in the world where you can spot blue whales in season from November to April.
Getting there: Take the train or drive from Colombo to Mirissa, roughly 3 hours.

Other beaches in Sri Lanka 

While making your way towards Yala National Park, there are many beaches along the way that you could choose to stop at / stay overnight in order to break up the long drive. Tangalle is a popular spot among tourists, where you can sometimes surf and hang out in beach bars, etc. 

One beach I would definitely recommend visiting is Silent Beach, not too far from Tangalle. It’s a beautiful stretch of white sand lined with palm trees. You can also find a few beach bars here and sunbeds to rent.  

National Parks: Best Places to Visit in Sri Lanka for Wildlife

Sri Lanka’s national parks are among the best places to visit in Sri Lanka for wildlife lovers. No matter which one you choose, you are likely to see elephants, many species of birds, and beautiful landscapes. The parks can get busy and sustainability still needs improvement, but they remain incredible experiences. I would manage expectations in the sense that, there will be times that you will be in one of many jeeps rushing around the parks trying to spot animals. 

In a way, it’s not even necessary to go inside the parks, because just being in these areas themselves you can walk through nature and spot most of these things on your own. If seeing a leopard or crocodile is on your list though, this you need to go on a tour for!

Yala National Park

Yala is the most famous park in Sri Lanka and known for having one of the highest leopard densities in the world, though still hard to see! 

What to expect: Leopards, elephants, crocodiles, and dramatic landscapes.
Why go: Best chance to spot a leopard in the wild.
Getting there: About 5 to 6 hours from Colombo by car. Many travelers visit from the south coast. 

We took a bus from Midigama to Tangalle, had a 1 night stop over for a break, then took another bus up to Katagarama. From here we took a Tuk Tuk (on the Pick Me app) to our accommodation. 

Depending on which part of the Yala National Park you wish to visit (block 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5) is where you should choose to stay. Block 1 is near the ocean, and block 5 is much higher up the B35 road towards Ella. Bare in mind that block 1 is the most popular one (highest chance of seeing a leopard) therefore also the most crowded!

Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe is famous for large herds of elephants and open grassland scenery. It is less popular than Yala National Park, meaning less crowds!

What to expect: Elephants roaming freely, birds, and a peaceful safari environment.
Why go: One of the best places in Sri Lanka to see elephants up close.
Getting there: Around 4 hours from Colombo by car, often combined with Ella.

Minneriya National Park

Minneriya is known for the incredible Elephant Gathering during the dry season when hundreds of elephants gather around the reservoir. This national park is near Sigiriya, so if you plan to go here to climb Piturangula rock, you can pair it with a trip to Minneriya!

What to expect: Massive elephant herds, open plains, and beautiful sunset safaris.
Why go: One of the most unique wildlife spectacles in Asia.
Getting there: Located near Sigiriya, about 4 to 5 hours from Colombo.

Central Highlands: Best Places to Visit in Sri Lanka for Nature and Adventure

The hill country is easily one of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka if you love cool air, mountain views, waterfalls, and scenic hikes.

Ella

Ella is a small mountain town surrounded by lush green hills, waterfalls, and hiking trails. The famous train ride into Ella is one of the most scenic in the world, although track repairs are ongoing. Even so, Ella remains one of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka for outdoor lovers.

What to expect: Waterfalls, tea fields, viewpoints, and relaxed backpacker energy.
Why go: Hike Little Adam’s Peak, visit Nine Arches Bridge, and explore countless trails.
Getting there: Scenic train from Kandy or drive from the south coast.

Little Adam’s Peak

• • What: Easy/moderate 45-60 min hike. Stunning 360° views of the valley.

  • Cost: Free

  • Tips: Start early to avoid the heat and crowds.

Ella Rock

• • What: Longer hike, 2.5-3 hours one way, offers panoramic views of mountains and tea fields.

Nine Arches Bridge

• • What: Iconic railway bridge in lush jungle. Short 15-20 min walk from the station.

  • Cost: Free

Lipton’s Seat & Tea Plantations

• • What: Tea estate with sweeping views of surrounding hills. Accessible via short hikes or jeep tours.

  • Cost: Entry around $3-$5

Nuwara Eliya

Often called Little England, Nuwara Eliya is known for its tea plantations, cool climate, and colonial charm.

TIP! If you’re short on time, you could skip this area as you can also see MANY tea plantations in Ella. We personally did not go to Nuwara Eliya.

Why go: Incredible panoramic views from the summit and rich cultural history.
Getting there: Around 4 to 5 hours from Colombo by car, often combined with Minneriya.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress (Lion’s rock)

• • What: Ancient UNESCO-listed rock fortress with frescoes and gardens.

  • Hike: 1.5-2 hours up and down.

Pidurangala Rock

• • What: Smaller rock nearby, climbs 20-30 minutes, epic views of Sigiriya at sunset.

  • Cost: Around $5 USD

  • Tips: Best for sunset photos. Less crowded than Sigiriya fortress.

TIP! I would personally not go to Lion’s rock – it’s so overpriced, crowded and you get the same views from Pidurangala rock which is right opposite!

Helpful Travel Tips for Visiting the Best Places to Visit in Sri Lanka

1. Travel slow. Distances may look short on the map but journeys can take longer than expected due to winding roads and traffic.
2. Eat local. Try rice and curry, kottu, rotis, coconut pancakes, and dhal for authentic flavors and affordable meals.
3. Carry cash. Many smaller cafes, tuk tuks, and local shops do not accept cards.

Most travellers begin in Colombo at the International airport and head north/central towards Sigiriya then Ella, then down south toward the beaches for their final few days of vacation. As we stayed for 1 month, we started in the south, staying along the coast for 2.5 weeks before making our way up into the country. No matter which way around you do it, there are many transport options to support you.

If you’re planning a trip to Crete and looking for an unforgettable outdoor challenge, hiking Samaria Gorge deserves a top spot on your list. Known as one of the most iconic hikes in the Greek Islands, this 16-kilometre trail takes you deep into a dramatic canyon, drops more than 1,200 metres in elevation, and finishes right at the Libyan Sea. It’s a full-day adventure – equal parts breathtaking, exhausting, and completely worth it.

Before you lace up your boots, it’s important to pre-plan as there’s lots of logistics involved for a smooth trip. Here’s a complete guide to help you plan the day from start to finish.

Hiking Samaria Gorge – Important details:

Distance: 16KM
Duration: 4.5-7 hours is normal. 
Opening time: 7am-4pm (9 hours)
Difficulty level: Easy-medium. 
Fitness level required: Basic, but good knees and ankles.

Hiking the Samaria Gorge isn’t particularly difficult. Some parts of the path are rocky, and there are steep sections but it’s 95% downhill. You don’t particularly need a great level of fitness to do this hike, but the length could be challenging for some (16KM). The other thing to note is that, due to it being mostly downhill, it can get tiring on your knees and ankles so if you need support, make sure to wear it!

When the gorge is open during the year

Hiking Samaria Gorge isn’t possible year-round. It only opens from 1st May to 31st October, with entry allowed between 7am and 4pm. If you arrive outside these hours, the gates will be closed, so planning your timing is essential, especially if you’re visiting in early May or late October when schedules can shift depending on weather conditions.

How to get to Samaria Gorge

The trailhead is located in the mountains of western Crete, and you have a few ways to reach it:

1. Public Bus from Xania (Chania)

This is one of the most convenient and affordable options.

• Cost: ~€7.50 one way
• Duration: Around 1 hour
• Departure: From Chania’s main bus station

2. Stay Overnight in Omalos.

If you want a calmer start to your morning, staying in Omalos is ideal. Most hotels offer a free shuttle to the trailhead.

3. Hiring a Car

You can also drive straight to the gorge entrance and park in the carpark for €5.

We combined options 2 and 3. We drove to Omalos the night before, booked two nights in Hotel Neos Omalos, and drove ourselves to the trailhead (5 minutes). I recommend doing two nights so that you can leave your belongings in your room, and can shower/rest that night after a long day in the gorge. The hotel has an on-site restaurant which is handy!

Entrance Fees & Tickets

The entrance fee to Samaria gorge costs €10 per person. What’s important here is that you must keep your ticket as you need it to check out at the exit. This is a safety measure to ensure everyone who enters also exits the gorge.
