Istanbul is a vibrant and historically rich city that offers a wide range of activities for visitors. It is a great place to visit and here are 5 things to do in Istanbul.
Visit a rooftop bar or cafe
One of the most beautiful ways to see the city is from above. There are many bars with rooftop viewpoints. My favourite two were:
+ Golden Horn Istanbul
This restaurant served beyond delicious local food, on the pricier side for Istanbul. Despite the price, I couldn’t recommend this place enough, and once you finish your meal, head upstairs to their rooftop lookout. It is especially beautiful during golden hour and sunset. You can then watch the city light up once the sun has gone down!
+ Mimar Sinan Teras Cafe
The food here is average, but the views are to die for. I definitely recommend even if you just go to grab a drink. There is also an area where you can have your photo taken (for a fee) with a mosque in the background and the traditional turkish carpets laid down on the floor.
Visit two of the most famous mosque’s in Istanbul
Hagia Sophia: This iconic structure has a fascinating history, serving as a cathedral, mosque, and now a museum. Its stunning architecture showcases a blend of Byzantine and Ottoman influences, making it a must-see landmark.
The Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque): Admire the intricate blue tiles that adorn the interior of this mosque, giving it its nickname. As an active place of worship, it’s important to be respectful of its religious significance and dress appropriately when visiting.
Wander through the Grand Bazaar
This historic market is one of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets. With thousands of shops offering everything from textiles to spices, ceramics, and jewelry, it’s a shopper’s paradise and a great place to experience the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
Take a Bosphorus Cruise
The Bosphorus Strait separates the European and Asian sides of Istanbul, and taking a cruise along its waters offers breathtaking views of the city’s skyline and landmarks. Sunset or evening cruises can be particularly enchanting.
Visit Topkapi Palace
Once the residence of Ottoman sultans, Topkapi Palace is a sprawling complex that houses various buildings, courtyards, and museums. Explore its historical artifacts, including the Imperial Treasury and Harem, while enjoying panoramic views of the city and the Bosphorus.
Istanbul is a great city to visit. I recommend staying for around 4 days to fully take it in. You can complete this 5 things to do in Istanbul list and then venture off around the city to see what else you can find! 🙂
